I think we could create a whole new series of Survivor based on sending criminals to an island with no suplies. If it's in the Pacific or between us and Jupiter whats the difference?

is the future of space travel unmanned? perhaps.

but one thing is for sure, the future of combat aircraft is headed that way very fast

just like the battleship commanders in the usn in 1941 thought that the aircraft carrier would never play a larger role than their beloved battleships, i am sure there are stick and rudder pilots who don't think that they will one day be replaced in day to day operational duties

The near future of space travel is not going to be manned exploration - its too expensive. But one day it won't be, and getting humans to populate other planets and solar systems is key it insuring better chances of the human race's survival in the future. All our eggs in one basket and we're too vulnerable.

As for unmanned fighter aircraft, do a search on UCAV and the X45, this is going to be a big part of future battles, where the pilot is in a bunker or trailer, flying and attacking enemies like it was a big video game.

From what I understand, any craft travelling to Mars would simply surround the living quarters with water and that would adequately shield them from the radiation.

As for cosmic rays, well, there's not much you can do about them; they streak through the Space Shuttle from time to time. Like the S&T article says, Mars would shield them from half of them. Mars does have a spinning core like the Earth, just smaller and less effective at generating a powerful magnetic field.

So what protects us on earth from cosmic rays? The electromagnetic field of the earth? Why couldn't you set up a em field around the spacecraft? hmmm, 'More power to the shields Scotty!' ;)

You are talking about a massive, powerful field and a thick, dense atmosphere though.

Possible solution using clear Aluminum. You might be able to add lead to it like you can with glass. Though I don't know that lead will block cosmic radiation. I know that water will but it really takes heavy water to do it properly and a lot of it.
