Apple today shared a trio of humorous Mac ads that focus on the battery life, Find My, and the performance capabilities of Apple silicon notebooks. The "Charged" ad, for example, shows a serious professor commenting on a student's remaining battery life.

"First class of the day and no charger? You're playing a dangerous game..." he says, but the student says that she doesn't have to worry about it because the Mac's battery lasts all day.

In "Powered," a student in a library is approached by a woman who says that laptops aren't meant to handle big files and multiple apps. "You think it won't crash?" she says. "You're a hot dog in a hurricane." The student lets her know that "it's a Mac," so it's "running fine."

The "Found" ad features a student looking for her laptop. "Yeah, computers have a funny way of vanishing around here..." says a man nearby. The student uses Find My to ping her laptop and is able to locate it while he's still going on about how computers are often sold for parts.

All three videos have a dramatic, funny vibe that should play well on social networks. The ads are 38 seconds long, so they'll likely be shown on TikTok, Instagram, and other social networks.

But do they switch to an external 4k monitor without issue? Because that is what I’m waiting for. My son’s M1 MBP has issues sometimes turning on from sleep when on external power and switching to the external monitor it is almost always connected to.

I must be getting old. Both of these ads seem slimy and not really funny. IMO, they need a new ad agency.

I never have problems with my Apple Studio Display or my LG HDR 4k, but I have heard some other 3rd party displays have this problem (still). If you google there are a lot of suggestions on how to correct.

"You're like a kite in a hurricane."
"You're like lawn furniture in a hurricane."
Hot dog??

Maybe at a baseball game? Yeah I didn't get that either. My guess is they still feel burnt by the crushing ad and so to not offend any furniture or kite lovers they went with hot dogs. Which now that I think about it, I am offended by. Definitely this add was put out by Wendy's.

The Charged one is quite funny thanks to the professor's acting.

But both seem odd. These qualities are nothing Mac/Apple specific. Especially with "laptops aren't made to handle all that, multiple apps, big files". Pretty much any laptop past ~2005 (arbitrary reasonably old year) can do that.

I get that the ads probably target "technically challenged" and try to bust some old myths, but both feel like if they made an ad where they show you that you can "surf the World wide web from your cellphone now".

But who am I to challenge Apple's marketing division reasoning. They know their demographics and what they want to achieve with which ad.

And why make this the strongest points right now while the new snapdragon laptops offer even longer battery life???

Absolutely. It sort of feels like Apple's just trying to remind consumers: "hey, you know we're relevant choice as well, don't forget about us", but that's half of advertisement in general. Building brand awareness.

I understand that in laptop/desktop world Apple is the underdog, so maybe that's why the brand awareness with such "generic" infotainment ads is indeed a thing for them unlike with iPhone where they try to show what's unique.

And I wouldn't be even that surprised if these ads actually try to partially target senior citizens so that they buy their grandkids Apple MacBook during the summer. Sort of early back to school campaign. Also with 38s runtime these don't feel like social media ads, more like linear TV broadcast ads.

Tune in next week when Chris Hanson shows up in class with a tv crew. “Take a seat, professor.”

Maybe it's a subliminal thing like "Eat Mor Chikin" and was sponsored by Der Wienerschnitzel.

Actualy you can say it this way... "the typical cheap $400 laptops can't do that". "But this thing costs over $1,000, so it can."

It doesn't matter much who built it. What's different about Apple is that they ignore the low-end segment of the market.
