I'm not surprised at the demand. My university here in the UK has a high proportion of international students, and pretty much every Asian international student has an iPhone 4 or 4S, and many have MacBook Pros and iPads as well. I very rarely see any other brand except Apple, and this goes to show a) they have the wealth to afford such products b) what a good marketing job Apple has done in reaching these emerging markets.![]()
Of course, students studying in foreign countries would pretty much define the higher income brackets of those countries from which the students came. It's not surprising that the foreign students can afford Apples, but it has nothing to bear on the question of whether average students from those countries can afford Apples.

...and the propensity of the wealthy in those markets for paying far more than one would expect for consumer goods with "luxury" appeal.
If that foreign student carries her mouse and required set of Apple dongles in a Louis Vitton clutch - bingo!
