Not saying it was an accident.
Sorry, but I have little patience for those who own guns but do not know how to handle and use their gun.

I think that is pretty much the cause of the majority of hunting accidents. Little/no safety training combined with "buck fever" is an accident waiting to happen. Add a dash of alcohol/drugs and a little territorial behavior and you have the makings for a serious disaster.

I thought this detail was interesting:

From the Associated Press (the suspect was Hmong):
Locals have complained that the Hmong, refugees from Laos, do not understand the concept of private property and hunt wherever they want. In Minnesota, a fistfight once broke out after Hmong hunters crossed onto private land, said Ilean Her, director of the St. Paul-based Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans.

That's too bad. I would like to hope that as a result of this incident there will be an education campaign among the Hmong so that this kind of thing can be prevented in the future.

I heard on the news that another victim has died, making it 6. The shooter of course is in jail. He will have a long time to think about the lives, that trespassing doesn't pay.

Probably could add fishing accidents to the list as well.

Alcohol/Drugs to not mix well with guns, cars, boats, planes, etc.

...and lack of training in any of these areas will bite you as well.

I would imagine that hunting in Laos is a more casual activity than here due to the fact that many Laotians supplement their income/diet by hunting. They are probably not used to the additional regulations/restrictions that are common in the US. Over there you probably just grab your gun and go out looking for game. Still, I have to wonder If this guy was really just hunting, since he was so willing to shoot people.

Yeah, bolt action rifles are more accurate as a rule, but the difference can be quite small, noticeable only to very experienced shooters. The US military uses M21 semi-auto rifles as sniper rifles, so they can be accurate enough for just about anything. The main thing about bolt actions are that they are stronger, so big game hunters use them with massive cartridges like the H&H Nitro 500 or 700, or .50 BMG.

I'm not a hunter, but I do know that here in Ohio we are restricted to using shotguns with slug barrels to hunt, so this kind of incident is less likely where I live.

BTW Awimoway, I find you avatar mildly disturbing - Willy Wonka (and those oompa loompas, whoa) freaked me out when I first saw the movie (yes I was rather young, but even now...) :D

And now I've got that damn song in my head, thank you very much.

Seems like you forgot to add all the home grown WisconSIN cannibals like Gein and Dalmer.. Must be something in the water in your state, or mb the beer ;)

Americans with guns.

Never been to America but reading stories like this it makes you think the entire country is one argument away from a postal of biblical proportions.

Can you lot not just **** each other instead?, more fun and nobody dies.

Same old head up arse news type of story that PC people will jump on, to ban Guns, Hunting or anything else they can tag on to what bad people do.

Here's some news, bad people will do bad things irrespective of what legislation there is or isn't.

Here's some news, in countries where it is very difficult to own a gun as a toy, theres a lot less gun related deaths.

I guess thats why we are trying to stop people buying knives too.
I do wonder what they'll do about kichen knives though, maybe they will introduce a licence to use them.
