Agreed. Everything I ever read by him seemed like a rambling mess. I guess even junkies have to make a living.

And what well people say about you when you die?
I know what i would say ...

Hunter S. Thompson was one of the last true american heroes ... offing himself should be a wake-up call for all of us. Those who misunderstand 'drugs' tend to misunderstand life itself. Life is psychedelic; your work-a-day work is nothing more than a bad trip.

I don't care what people say about me when I die. What I can say about myself at that point is far more important.

If you consider life to be a bad trip, then we're probably not going to agree on a lot of things.

I don't think you'll be saying much when your dead ...

I don't consider life a 'bad trip'; only the current modern state that we humans seem to subject ourselves to. life is the most beautilful complex state of being; working to make more garbage, ingesting processed food stuffs, and taking anger out on a those around us is a bad trip ... i don't believe in every word Hunter had to say, but i believe his intentions were good. :)

Nicely put... it's too bad more people don't see things that way. It's a downright tragedy the amount of time we spend doing things that are meaningless, unenjoyable, or even detrimental to others and the world around us. Seems like the time we actually spend doing what we truly WANT to be doing is a pitifully small fraction of our lives.

Unless of course you're someone like Thompson... he was an individual who actually had the guts to live exactly the way he wanted and didn't give a damn what anyone else thought about it. He was an amazing man and an amazing writer. Sure was a shame to see him go. :(

PS: Aloofman - His work may have been a "rambling mess" to some (which is fine, everyone is entitled to his own opinion), but the man was NOT a junkie. Read his bio or his book of letters (Proud Highway), learn a little something about his life, and I think you'll have to agree I'm right. ;)

I'm still anxiously awaiting your brothers article/account of what went on at the service. Waiting until the 7th is getting to be painful.

Thank you so much for posting that. I'm so jealous of your brother and his friend. I have some friends and family that live in Woody Creek who have known Thompson for decades and even they weren't invited to the memorial. Your brother is one lucky, lucky man. Thanks again.

No problem at all. He's still in disbelief-feeling very undeserving.

He talked to Bill Murray, and Johnny Depp... Kind of weird, but he played it off like he didn't know who they were.
