Diesels are actually the worst. The emit carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemicals, along with very very large amounts of pure carbon. They do emit less carbon dioxide gas though.
And do twice the amount of miles to the gallon that a petrol car does. There's more you can't see from a petrol car than from a diesel. I'm not arguing that any car is 'good' for the environment though. All cars are bad for the environment but our society (Europe and US) is sadly based around them so they are a fact of life. We should at least be making the cars (and buses) as efficient as possible (meaning no 4 ltr monsters and SUVs).
To address your other point:
Global warming is real and not just part of the normal cycles on Earth, though that may also be happening at the same time. Don't believe everything the car/oil industry tell you.
