I genuinely, genuinely worry about the mentality of anyone who thinks the absence of a file system makes something easier to use.

It doesn't. Not for novice users, not for advanced users, not for anyone.

Apple's greatest failure is it's attempts to get rid of the file system while making a miserable failure of it's supposed replacement.

There's a danger when it comes to KISS. You ignore what people want on their phone. There's nothing complex about choosing your own browser or your own audio player.

Really? Do you know what most iOS users are like (outside of the realm of MacRumors)? I doubt more than a handful have even thought about using an alternative browser on their phone...

Any thoughts on actually why you say this? I think getting rid of the file system is a great idea because there'll be less tinkering and therefore less chance of it breaking. Which in turn leads to a much better experience for the end user.

Just to add my reply to the one above on this one, you're ignoring what most people want on their phone: content! They don't want access to a browser changing agent or to some bizarre java options. They want to read news, check sports scores, check restaurants, check timetables.

Step back from the IT fanatics and think about the people outside of Macrumors who have iPhones, like my mother.

But it isn't hard to jailbreak... In fact, how could it be any more simple and easy than the latest absinthe jailbreak?

Every single update removes the jailbreak, then you have to wait for them to get around Apple's latest anti-jailbreak patch. You also can't downgrade iOS anymore, or it's very hard at least.

Hypothetical: What if Calidude stops making irrelevant threads and goes back to his fandroid forums?

1. I have a brain and I think the world would be a better place if he shuts up
2. This forum will be much cleaner if he shuts up
3. Calidude needs to shut up and proceed with his planned BJ session with Larry Page
4. ALL of the above.

Some don't know how to download apps.

Calidude is not trolling with his posts.

My dad has no idea what a file system is but he can check/send email, look at the weather radar and check his bank/CC account. My 5 year old niece also has no idea what a file system is but she can play dozens of learning games and has no trouble navigating and finding her way around without a file system. Your argument may hold some water referring to MacRummers users but to say a confusing file system would in anyway make the iPad easer to use for my dad or niece is incorrect. You will find this applies to a large (and getting larger) percentage of device users. People don't want to have to learn to "program their VCR" to watch a show.

Sorry but the filesystem as it stands today, is the bane of our computing platforms. It is a horrible single threaded performance throttling restriction, that may have made sense on single spinning disk systems, but has been kerbing progress for a while now. This is to me why it's obscured on iOS so that it can be replaced in the near future. Look at what is happening with Solid State storage the File system as it stands makes less and less sense.

It looks like Apple and others are moving towards "file services" like iCloud with agents on the device that manage for us data cached on device and the hosted central store. The last piece of the puzzle is the link that allows the sandboxed agent to service sandboxed apps.

So if Apple had 1000 engineers to throw at this "VIP iOS" wouldn't it be better they work on progressing the system along the lines they are already tracking?

I like the idea of a pro version.

More granular settings (think do not disturb x10)

the ability to set default apps.

Maybe color settings so we can get rid of the warmer/cooler problems.

More multitasking abilities

Ability to download files through the browser

Essentially legitimize the jailbreak, it would lead to the jailbreak app devs earning lots more money and being able put much more polish on thier apps.

Not a bad idea, you could have:

iOS Starter
iOS Basic
iOS Premium
iOS Professional
iOS Ultimate

I just hope it's a joke. I'ma assume it is. As this is a big complaint about Windows and a big selling point for me on Mac OSX.

I voted "I approve this," but I don't think a separate version is actually needed. As other posters have already noted, all that is needed is root access, aka jailbreak. If Apple would just provide an official way for users to gain root access, then guess what? iOS already has a file system, which is just hidden away from the end user. All other features, like widgets and more customization options are already avaiable in the jailbreak communities.

You seem to misunderstand the person's comment you replied to with your quote. It's not hard to see that he was referring to the difficulty toward the development of a jailbreak due to how secure iOS actually is.

To apply the jailbreak after it was put together by the jailbreak team is easy, to develop it takes a level of skill nearly everyone here lacks.
