It's amazing to see what is going on in America right now. In the city of Orlando, FL alone this year there have been over 30 murders, just as far as July. Last year, Orlando posted only about 25 killings for the ENTIRE YEAR. Now I understand why I'm more comfortable going around Jacksonville at night.

I hear you.

In 2005, Hartford had 21 murders per 100,000 people -- third highest rate in the country behind Gary, Indiana and Jackson, Mississippi.

Many portions of Hartford long ago stopped being a safe place. And these statistics are down from the gang days in the late 90's early ots.

Slightly unrelated, but my Dad almost got shot by a lunatic once. He was studying in his 2nd floor apartment as usual in college (1970's), and got up to take a break in his bedroom. Just then, BAM! He looked into the living room and white fluff from his chair was floating all over the room. The guy below him shot his gun unto the ceiling for no reason. Had he not taken a study break just then, he could have died. My Dad called the cops and they took the guy away.

This whole story freaked me out quite a bit. I live in SE Wisconsin currently, but will be moving to Cincinnati in a few months. Between now and then, I will be traversing that section of I-65 several times, as it's the *only* feasible way to get from where I live now to Cincinnati.

They did arrest a 17 year old, who apparently confessed... we'll see how it pans out.

This is a great example of whyWE DON'T NEED TO HAVE GUNS. Unless you're part of that well-regulated militia outlined in the Second Amendment, you have no reason. (And no, the entire country is not a militia.)

Cincinnati is an interesting area due to its proximity to Kentucky and southern Indiana. It's been a very nice city and years ago, anyone who was anyone lived on the east side. Things have changed as with any city and they've had some turmoil but nothing you'd probably see on your daily commute to work.

I wouldn't worry about too much about I-65, you'll need I-74 to get into Cincinnati anyway. ;)

Lots of people have guns in the area, but it's not that often people use them for something other than hunting or practice.

How often does this sort of thing happen in America?

I don't want to sound like an a**, but it seems like Americans kill for fun most of the time.

At least in Canada they usually have a reason. Most of the victims were having affairs with the murderers' wives. :p

I know I know! I'd love to love america. I'm debating on whether I should move over there when I graduate, just for a new life sorta thing. but the gun problem scares me!
The fact that anyone can own a gun just really scares me. that there are people on this forums with guns... I've never even seen one before!

I don't like guns but I also know that this isn't the wild west that the U.S. movie studios portrayed long ago. It's most likely that the majority of MacRumors members haven't seen a gun up close in use, either.

I'd say that more murders are committed by drunk drivers than by gun owners and drunk drivers often get away with it several times.

I'd have the same hesitation to visit England because of the footie fans (esp. ManUtd), but I suspect it's not an everyday occurrence. ;)

I take I-65 into Indy every day and it is pretty scary to think someone is sick enough to do something like that. You really have to wonder what the hell is wrong with some people.

Down here, we have private gun conventions. People shooting off gatlin guns, flame throwers, semi-automatics, cannons... it's fun to watch. I have no fear of someone pointing a gun to my face, not because I'm not afraid of death, but because it is extremely unlikely for yourself to get caught in those situations (at least here in my rural to small city surroundings). Just depends where you live in the U.S. I guess.

Indeed, but they have to get close to use most anything else, except for bow and arrow. They could be killed by the person they're trying to murder. Guns are safer for criminals because they can kill from a distance. However, the dumber ones might shoot themselves by accident.

Only 1/4 of the murders in the US are committed w/firearms so I think it's safe to say that having the ability to "kill from a safe distance" isn't very high on a murder's list of priorities. ;)

The chances of you dieing in a car crash are astronomically higher than the chances of you getting shot while driving on the freeway so worrying about that is like walking thru a mine field and going, "Gee, that looks like a storm coming. Hope I don't get hit by lightening."

I'm sure these people enjoy the fact that private citizens can bear arms.
A knife-wielding grocery store employee attacked eight co-workers Friday, seriously injuring five before a witness pulled a gun and stopped him, police said.

Oh yes, I'm quite aware of that. (I'm one of the people who remind others how safe air-travel is vs. auto travel) It's just the shock that someone would have the means (and the balls) to decide who on I-65 gets to live or die at any particular moment.
