Pardon me if I posted in the wrong forum but I am new to this site.
Anyway, as the title poses, I accidentally left it charging for such a long time, 12 hours.
What does this do to my laptop and can you suggest ways to help keep the battery life longer? I've been getting mixed signals.
Also, my laptop is new and I only bought it last May 30.

There's absolutely nothing to worry about. Just use your laptop as such. The 2 things good for killing batteries are leaving it dead for extended periods of time and leaving it plugged in all the time (as in, never taking it off your desk!)

"All the time" means "more than a month at a time". You should run a MacBook on batteries at least once a month. But 12 hours plugged in is an absolutely normal thing to do. Many people have their MacBooks on a desk, permanently plugged in, except when they need to move around for some reason. And that's fine (except for the "once a month"). So not only is there nothing to worry about, you didn't actually do anything wrong.

My 2009 MBP has hardly ever been unplugged from the mains and still has 97% battery health so I wouldn't worry about it. I always leave both of mine charging when not using them, and most of the time when I am using them. There are still a few myths around that date from older battery technology I guess.

No problem. Nothing to worry about.

Run on battery whenever you need to and plug it in whenever you can. You can plug or unplug at any time, regardless of the charged percentage. Just make sure you don't run on AC power all the time, as your battery needs to be used regularly to stay healthy. This should answer most, if not all, of your battery questions:

Most of the time mine sits on a desk plugged in. But most evenings, I do use it unplugged while on the couch etc. Sometimes, probably about twice a month, it will run all the way down while I am using it and I will have to plug it back in. When done for the evening, I plug it back in regardless of the level to charge over night and be ready for the next day. Just use it.
