Hello Mac Rumors community,
(With no reply on the Apple forum after several days, I thought I'd see if any of the fine folks here would be willing to respond. Thank you. :) )

I have a volume on my external HDD that I have been attempting to CC Clone a copy of my Mac HD to. It fails and renames the target volume as Mac HD. I have erased/ renamed this volume many times when reattempting to retry the clone. This is an issue I'd like to figure out, but not the one I am looking to fix with this post.

When going to rename the external HDD volume errantly renamed as Mac HD again after another CCC 6 clone attempt, I inadvertently selected my REAL Mac HD and started changing the name. Not sure if I finished, or stopped in process, but now I think the hierarchy shown in Disc Utility looks wrong. What should the hierarchy look like and how do I get it corrected?

I have attached screen shots of Finder and Disc Utility. I'm not sure, BUt I think my internal Mac SSD used to be named Mac HD (from new).
[ EDIT: 11/26 8am, I added screen shots of System Report > Storage > Data (& Macintosh HD). I thought about running Disc Util. First Aid, but not sure which level to do that on. ]

Thanks,
Dave

"I inadvertently selected my REAL Mac HD and started changing the name."

Do the following in the finder -- NOT in disk utility.

Just click on the drive icon in the finder ONE time to select it.
Then, you may need to hit the "enter" (or return) key ONE time to activate text entry.
Then, just type in whatever name you wish for it and hit return to save it.

It DOES NOT have to be "Macintosh HD" -- that's the "default name" that Apple gives all internal startup drives.

The name can be anything you want it to be.

I haven't had a Mac with a "Macintosh HD", in at least 30 years.

BTW, I WOULD NOT try to use a container on an external drive for a CCC backup.
Instead, I would get a SEPARATE drive (preferably an SSD), and use that as my dedicated cloned backup.
Which is... exactly what I do for several Macs in the house.

I have attached screen shots

I'm a bit confused about screenshots #1 and #2. Was #1 a previous state of your system? Is #2 the current state of your system?

Screenshot #1 shows an extraneous volume "Macintosh HD", so isn't "correct" for what you want.

Screenshot #2 shows a correct setup, although it may not have the names you desire. The default, I believe (I've changed mine), is "Macintosh HD" for the Volume Group and the System volume, and "Macintosh HD - Data" for the Data volume.

Shot #2 has "Macintosh HD for the Volume Group and the System volume and its startup snapshot -- all just like it came from Apple. However, the Data volume is called "Data" (instead of "Macintosh HD - Data").

So, IF Screenshot #2 shows your current state, it looks fine the way it is. Or, you could rename only the Data volume to the default of "Macintosh HD - Data". You can do that in Disk Utility by selecting your Data volume, and make sure the right-side pane, second line, says "APFS Data Volume". Then right-click the selected line and choose Rename.

I think my internal Mac SSD used to be named Mac HD (from new).
I don't think so. I could be wrong, but I'm almost certain that all recent Macs are still shipping with what I mentioned above... "Macintosh HD".

That's correct. All Macs ship with a disk named "Macintosh HD" but users can rename it to nearly anything.
