Airserver can do the same thing for OS X machines, but doesn't currently support iOS mirroring, due to it's FairPlay encryption.

It will however stream out youtube, etc etc to your MacBooks desktop

What's the advantage??

Hey everyone,

Just wondering why you guys all purchased Apple TV?? What's so good about it? What does it offer over and above then a regular cable box?

THanks.

Mainly for the integration with other apple devices; sending videos taken with my phone to my TV with AirPlay, that kind of thing.

Have used it for a few rented movies since I got it as it was easier to use than the PS3. Pretty steep prices though on the new stuff (although all the digital services seem to be pretty much the same!)

You don't need an Apple TV to do this, you can use the HDMI adapter and it'll do the same thing.

I don't have an Apple TV but I did use the HDMI adapter and raced my wife on Real Racing 2 with our 4S's projected on our 52" Sony...

Video streaming and app mirroring also all work using the HDMI adapter.

One thing I've noticed is that certain games (like Tiny Wings) are basically trash because of the .4 second (estimated) delay. :(

ZLDFMKASLalmdW#%$!@#$QSDFdlkJFLSDMFALSDKFJ!!!

Sigh...

I REALLY wanted to be able to play snes4iPhone on my TV using a bluetooth wiimote, but if the timing is a half second off that basically trashes the ability to play any games on your TV w/ an iPhone that require timing :(:(:(

Thanks iBreathApple for letting me know and saving me the trouble :)

Looking forward to doing this with real racing :) Can't wait to see what other developers try to do with it

Okay so I'm confused...

I just let my AppleTV update itself. My TV and Apple TV are both on.

On my iPhone 4S, I double clicked and swiped left once (and as a former 3G user, I saw the music controls for the first time ever). I swiped left once more - and all I see is a volume control. There is no mirroring/airplay icon to be found anywhere.

What am I missing? How do I get this mirroring thing to work for me?!

Is home sharing on? Are your devices on the same network?

You just did the AppleTV update now? Chances are it didn't update to 4.4 and is still on 4.3 because Apple took down the 4.4 update. Go into the AppleTV settings and check the software version.

If you have a micro USB cable you can manually update to 4.4 via your computer.

As for usefulness...it's useful when you want to show something on your phone to other people and have them see it on the big screen, such as a website. NFL Sunday Ticket also works which is awesome...no more watching a game on the small iPhone screen.

You are right 4.3. So I have a micro USB. Do I update through iTunes with it connected to the computer?

Find the Apple TV 4.4 IPSW file online and download that then connect the Apple TV and restore thru iTunes by choosing the IPSW you downloaded.

Are you on OSX Lion? I've heard some people are having problems doing this if not on Lion.

There is a reason why you forgot about it - the feature is cute but kind of useless.

Actually it is extremely useful to anyone who needs to demonstrate things from their iPad/iPhone but were previously limited only to apps that specifically supported external displays.

Actually went to 4.3 then to 4.4.2 over wifi, worked great!!!

Thanks always fun to play with the ATV2.

Take a look at the ATV subforum. It is nothing like a cable box.

Anyway to get it to work with devices other than Apple TV? Like PS3, or Wifi-enabled TV's?

Not sure if I should get the Apple TV right now for that or not...

Thanks this actually kind of cool. Especially if you want to show a group of people an app or photos etc.

Yup, it's a shame when pirated software doesn't work the way you want it to.
