I would jump on a smaller iPad right now (for you smart alec, I mean buy).

For what I want to do with it, the current size is too big.

I want to grasp it one handed, so about 5.5" wide (edit: this is NOT screen size, which is a diagonal measurement. Will be about 7~8" screen)

All the features of iPad 2, with gyro, 3+ MP back camera w/ flash.
A more durable and water resistant case (something to travel with, a lot)

I realize battery life will likely be reduced, but I am Ok with that.

Edit:
One can petition to Apple using the iPad feedback page.

I don't see that happening. Personally, the iPad right now is just perfect. 7" is way too small for me, forget 5.5". Anyhow, that's my opinion.

So, whats to stop Apple to make a smaller iPad?

Fair, but what's to stop Apple from making a larger iPad? Or an e-ink iPad? Or an Apple LED TV that the rumors never seem to die for?

At the moment, Apple clearly doesn't think there's a large enough market to make a smaller iPad. The new Kindle Fire might change that perception though.

larger iPad-no
e-ink iPad-no
LED Apple TV-yes
larger iPod touch-yes

edit: and don't forget, the new portable iMac in Spring 2012

Dnt waste too much effort looking for the smaller iPad.

Misspelled from my iPad 2

Apple needs a smaller cheaper version of the iPad maybe with the insides of an iPod touch but in a 7.7 inch screen :D

Stop nagging

NOW I wish they make a smaller one... just because all the people talking like they're working for Apple and they actually know what Apple will do with their devices.

the OP is just sharing his thoughts... the Forum is not just about posting news or tutorials.

I am too and thats why I preordered a Kindle Fire. I have my iPad 2 and will buy the iPad 3 but I like the smaller form factor but yet bigger than my phone. I don't see how people say a 7" tablet is too small but a 3.5" iPhone is just fine. I don't know about others but I use my iPhone and iPad for the same uses besides phone calls obviously.

Someone in Apple will see this besides their feedback page.

What, you do not think Apple keeps tabs on communities?

Ok, suppose they keep tabs on this community. Do you think your post, or this thread, is indicative of a demand Apple might want to satisfy? It's not. Do you think Apple hasn't already thought of any of your demands? They have.

I know I can ignore whatever threads I want, I was just wondering if there was something more to the OP than a random wish list.

And the people responding to the OP are just sharing their thoughts. Some more politely than others.

What would be better, that that OP posted and no one ever responded? Or that a discussion has begun?

everyone should represent their life with their comments... if someone is sarcastic then continue with sarcastic comments, if someone is a bitter person then continue with the bitter comments, and so on...

Anyway... for the OP, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is 7.5 inch and it costs as much as the iPad.

Well from a business standpoint, a 5 inch tablet would, for the most part, cannibalize existing iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch sales. It would not necessarily generate a significant new stream of revenue for Apple.

What it would do, is subject Apple to higher production costs, as they would have to source a different set of parts, and build a separate set of devices.

It just doesn't make sense. Maybe it does for Samsung, who is trying so hard to establish a foothold in the tablet market that they're throwing multiple products onto the wall and praying that something sticks.

I think it would make more sense for them to make the iPhone larger.
