Amazon will sell several million Kindle Fires. It will be successful for them, though they will take the same approach as they did with the Kindle and sell them for little more than cost.

It will never threaten the iPad.

It's not designed to.

Like the Op, I, too, would like a 7" iPad. For a few weeks, I tried out the Galaxy Tab. While the size was nice, the OS wasn't to my liking. If it had iOS, it would have been nice. If you read a lot, the 7" size is sweet.

Having said that, I still really like my 1st gen iPad. Despite what Steve said, there's room for both. It's Cook's ship now. We'll see...

if apple releases a smaller version, that's fine. but, i have no interest in a smaller ipad. i read a lot, but i prefer to do it using a book stand (i like the bookgem) or my incase origami stand. i don't hold books while i read, no matter what the size, so the bigger the better.

You get 5m of your friends together and place an order and you might see a 7" iPad. It will still be $499 and will have a shorter battery life...

I own Playbook and iPad 2.

The Kindle Fire announced today really is a poor mans version of the Playbook since it was designed by the same company.

You can get the Playbook for close to $250 these days brand new with "promos" RIM is running and the new OS to be release will include an Amdroid Player to be backwards compatible with Android apps

I personally got my playbook for $299 (32GB) plus $100 MasterCard rebate sp about $200 for 32Gb Playbook.

For those not knowleable because this is Apple site. The Playbook with it's QNX OS is very fast. It's got GPS, HD cameras, 3d hardware acceleration. 1Gb ram.

Amazon stripped down their tablet and only included 512MB RAM and running Honeycomb is asking for disaster.

The Fire isn't running Honeycomb. It's running Gingerbread.

I'm not in the market for either, but I would much rather have a Fire than a Playbook. At least the Fire has native email support at the moment!

Did you try...

I would jump on a smaller iPad right now (for you smart alec, I mean buy).

For what I want to do with it, the current size is too big.

I want to grasp it one handed, so about 5.5" wide (edit: this is NOT screen size, which is a diagonal measurement. Will be about 7~8" screen)

All the features of iPad 2, with gyro, 3+ MP back camera w/ flash.
A more durable and water resistant case (something to travel with, a lot)

I realize battery life will likely be reduced, but I am Ok with that.

washing it on a hot cycle: most times I wash stuff that way it shrinks...:)

I wonder about that figure. Not that I think it's impossible, but if the tablet can last 14 hours doing the web surfing where most of the screen is white: for now AMOLED really chugs through battery when there's a lot of white.
As all tech ages it gets less expensive and more efficient. The step from NiMh to Lithium batteries made a huge difference in battery duration and product size. The same is true for AMOLED technology. Samsung has been continually advancing that technology and wouldn't be putting it into a tablet unless they had it efficient and reliable and competitive. I'll agree we'll need to see it to trust it, but I also expect the next iPad to do better than 10 hours or I'll lose faith in Apple completely.

Alongside the issues of whether there is an actual market, and whether it would harm Apple's overall bottom line (by multiplying SKUs and parts), I think there are simply straightforward technical problems:

Either the resolution will be
- the same as the iPod Touch/iPhone, blown up (ugh)
- the iPad resolution reduced (doubtful, but who knows)
- some kind of interpolation (also yuck, and I know some people think it would be fine, that's okay, but don't bother arguing, I've made up my mind)
- a third resolution for developers to work with.

iPhone 4 / iPod Touch 4 Retina Display resolution is 326DPI on a 3.5" screen. Double that to 7" and you get 163 DPI (ironically, slightly less then Galaxy Tab 7" @ 169 DPI)
iPad 2 display is 132 pixels per inch (ppi)

So, doubling the the size of an Retina Display is still better then iPad 2 (and I was only considering shrinking the 1024x768 down for 7" iPad).

Honestly, Carouser, you failed so miserably at that argument perhaps it is best you find something else to complain about.

They already have a smaller iPad, it's the iPod touch.

7 inch is still too large to stick in your pocket, and too small to surf/work/play. If you really want a tablet that size then go buy one, it's not like they don't exist, but personally I'll just stick to my iPod touch in my pocket and my iPad in my handbag.

I have/use iPad Touch 4G, and I used my folks have iPad 2, and neither are best suited for my needs.
Yes, I would have to have a carry bag or a really big pocket, but that is much less of an issue for me then the iPad size.

You also have to consider that a small iPad would have to sell at a lower price, and that then cost of the components in smaller iPad would not be proportionately less expensive. As such, the margins on these smaller iPads would be smaller.

...
I could see this happening, however, if a competitor came in with a 7 inch tablet and started eating apples market share on the basis of the size of the tablet alone. But I don't see that happening either.

Not necessarily. Smaller case, smaller screen, 1 less battery would be significant savings over full size. The motherboard could be the same, so that expense is shared.

And why do you think the 7" would hurt Apples profitability?
We do not know how big a market for a 7" iPad is, and even if it is a small 10% of the 10", it will still equate to 1 million units.

Again, Apple sells TWO sizes of MBA, TWO sizes of iMac, and THREE sizes of MBP!

At least 4 times...

1. No one wants to watch video on an iPod
2. Apple won't make a tablet
3. Apple won't make a phone
4. Apple won't make a touch-screen ipod

Thanks! :):)

Add up all the sales of 7" tablets in the last year from every company and it does not equal two weeks of iPad sales.

...

Will there ever be a 7" iPad? Perhaps, but it's not a size that appeals to a broad audience - which current sales clearly demonstrate. It won't ever sell for $299, so what would be the point? Would you pay $499 for a 7" iPad? I know I wouldn't

A childishly simple answer:
No serious competition.

I could not even find a comparison of sales between Galaxy Tab 7" and 10" because of such a small sales volume.

as the next poster points out...

You are all missing the point. The form factor of the device is secondary to what's in the device. It's the content, stupid.

The iPad is successful because of apps, iTunes, and iBooks. It's icing on the cake that it gives you that in styled, but clunkier would work too.

Amazon is a serious player because of kindle content and, increasingly, Amazon prime video.

Thank you MrCalabash!

It is the content, not the device.
A LOT of books are about 7", so it is not strange to use something of that size.

Again, after using the <BIG> and the >small<, I want something just right. :)

I think it would be cheaper than $499; possibly $399 or maybe $349. The screen alone is a lot cheaper. However, I agree that it would take 5m friends.

Unlike the next iPhone, I'm not anxiously waiting for it. It would just be nice.

The Fire looks promising. Yes, it's not comparable to an iPad, but for $199, it's got a lot.

That's the point

Apple's iPad is only one size. But some MacRumors users, I thinking a few posts ahead of yours, do make a smaller iPad by dropping from 6 feet to a solid ground. Comes with various sizes and shapes too!! Just playing...

I had both iPad2 and Galaxy Tab. I had the latter for a month and got rid of it on eBay. I'm frequent traveler, work, eat, sleep and shxx with my tablet. iPad's size is perfect for both business and pleasure. Especially now with the iMovie apps. The screen size is just perfect to work on anything.

Galaxy Tab on the other hand was compact and easy to carry. Now, this is the only advantage of Galaxy Tab. If your main purpose of getting a tablet is to carry around with you and not use it, it is for you. My personal experience, most lady friends preferred the compact size of Galaxy, some even got it. Then I always get these when they come over to my place and play with my iPads, "Wow, the screen looks really nice, I never thought I could play the same game this way", or "The text looks crisp and sharp" while she was reading the same PDF with DocsToGo, which she used to the version she see in her Samsung with the same app. Now they are switched back to iPad2.

Someone in Apple will see this besides their feedback page.

What, you do not think Apple keeps tabs on communities?

Communities? You mean a rumor site?

You really can't be serious....

----------

It isn't that people lack creativity...its that most people lack business sense. Just because something sounds like a good idea, doesn't mean it makes sense from a business standpoint.....just because a product sells/will sell, does not mean it makes sense!

Tim Cook said: "Apple gets 1000 great ideas a day but Apple has to focus on what is real".

I think that says it all.

You do know that Steve Jobs lies a lot to throw off competitors.
They will make anything if it's in their best interest. Who are you kidding?

THIS!

For everyone to compare iPad to 7" Galaxy Tab is like comparing, well, Apples to Oranges.

Everyone knows iPad looks and works incredibly well, that is why it dominates the market (and competitors are falling like flies, despite selling for hundreds less).

The only real way to review the virtues of a 7.x" iPad is to make one.

Regardless, I have an iPod Touch 4G and use iPad 2, and my ideal size is in between.

90% of the Apple rumors didn't pan out. No new iPad, no larger iPhone, and no aesthetic changes to iOS. One more year of the same-old from Apple.

6" would be perfect...

After using the latest 6" Kindle I have to say that a 6" iPad would be perfect. Why? Pocket-ability. The latest Kindle fits perfectly in my front pocket. The weight is also perfect. I use the iPad 2 mostly for web content and ebooks but it's overall size keeps me from taking it out of house (I commute by train to work). If Apple released a 6" version of the same spec'd low-end iPad 2 for say $299 I think they would sell a bunch.

I think you are right about what a smaller iPad should sell for. The "new" price for a great 7" tablet is $299. See the Blackberry Playbook and HTC Flyer.

Add up all the sales of 7" tablets in the last year from every company and it does not equal two weeks of iPad sales.

Consumers have simply not expressed a desire with their cash, which is where the real answer lies.

The Kindle Fire is only going to steal sales from the Nook and the high end Kindle.

Since they are not shipping until the middle of November, that does not bode well for sakes this year. I'd say they will sell 2m if they are lucky - assuming they actually can start shipping two months from now...

Supposedly they have preordered more than 900,000 kindles so far so they might hit 2 million

Why does this thread exist?

Why do people start such meaningless threads? #1 disqualification is the OP's signature, which harkens back almost to the Multimedia era, #2 is his self-important posturing and sheer fantasy that he could make Apple even twitch a whisker. His "ideas" are boring beyond belief. Yes, "regular" people do not have un-regular ideas, that is why they are "regular" people.

I would suggest that he is no different than the many others that want a tablet and in finding this forum, they start posting questions and asking for various iterations of the iPad or how come no smaller iPad.

Not sure what his sig really means or what it says. I doubt you are truly the King of Kustard.

Not sure what the multimedia era is, or what you mean my it. Today is the multimedia era, I suppose. The iPad is designed for multimedia, is it not? iTunes is all about MM as well. Care to explain?

Not sure if it is sheer fantasy to ask for a 7-inch iPad. Just a wish expressed. Seems fair to me. Like the insufferable posts about "why no Flash" drive me nuts, but it is a legitimate query. We know why Apple did not grant the planet Flash, but many do not. They only hear the iPad is crippled because there is no Flash so it is somehow inferior.

Not going to debate the feasibility of a 7" ipad, but I will say this. If you're serious about Apple bringing one out, then you should e-mail them or post this in their forums. Posting it here is a fan wank, because Apple doesn't read this forum. If all you want to do is pump up your post count or practice your debate skills, that's all this thread is good for.

You do not really need to debate it. Apple will do what they want to do. Chances are, there is a prototype somewhere in Apple's labs. I agree, they will likely not produce one because it is not a good move. The current version meets the needs of the devs and Apple.
