Ever try listening to something on a netbook? Worthless. I wonder how loud the speaker would be able to get in the iPad. I venture to guess not very as the vibrations could be bad for the device and the power will be bad for battery life. Any guesses out there? Will it be better then netbook speakers? Or will we be looking for speaker docks soon?

OK? Obviously no one knows what the speaker really sounds like, but you are probably right that it's not fantastic. Does it really matter?

If you are expecting surround sound, you will likely be disappointed
It will be like anything else... it will meet the needs of many as a personal device,
but others will complain as always

It'll probably be the same awful experience as the iPod touch.
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but I've got no problem with the speaker on my iPod Touch. It's obviously not going to fill a room with sound but for my uses (listening to games and videos without bothering with headphones) it works fine.

I seem to remember that one of the guys who got hands-on with an iPad at the event was pretty impressed with the speaker, unfortunately I can't remember where I read that.

Not expecting the speaker to be very good, but there are times when it would be useful to have a decent speaker. Why not two speakers with stereo output? Place them kittie-corner (catty-corner if you prefer) from each other and they would produce a reasonable stereo sound no matter which way the iPad was rotated.

I bet there will be one speaker, and at least two grilles, and there will be at least fifty threads on MacRumors asking why the second speaker isn't working.

What do you expect? Even most larger portable devices don't have the space for a resonance chamber.

Do you want the iPad to be thick as a boombox?

One of the reviews from a site who had a hands on after the event said the sound was fairly pleasing and much better than they had expected. Can't find the site now, though.

The rumor from those who demoed the iPad on announcement day was that the speaker sucked

Probably intentional so we are forced to buy newer model down the line

Typical apple business model

what makes u think a newer model will have an excellent speaker? the 2g touch speaker is lousy. the Apple Hi-Fi speaker sucked. apple isn't all that great at making good sounding products. Some other mp3 player brands make better sounding units than ANY Apple iPod. High sound quality is not one of Apple's fortes. http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/06/apple-hi-fi-rip-2006-2007/

If your decision whether to buy or not buy an iPad comes down to speaker quality, you probably can't hear well because your head is up your a$$. It's a portable device, not a quadraphonic Blaupunkt. Get a good set of headphones.

there is three little grills with one speaker behind there. Most the hands on reviews from the launch said it was loud enough to hear over the croud.

Most expect it to be like the TARDIS, much bigger on the inside than on the outside
Isn't there a thread somewhere on this iPad forum wherein we receive reports about the 4th gen models by time travelers from about 2013? I think they were using an iPad function to do that, so maybe it does violate some of the known laws of causality.

What kind of frequency response would be possible if the back consisted of 2 "large" electrostatic speakers?

Photos of the iPad show 3 grills just to the right of the 30pin dock connector, the specs mention 'Built-in speakers', so i'm sure you won't be dancing about the level of stereo. I'm sure it'll be adequate for casual use. Question is will Apple bundle earbuds. Answer, NO.
