Agreed I'm really really looking forward to it if they can inprove the battery life by 1 or 2 hours make the SP5 screen a bit bigger I am sold.

The SB is awesome but I just couldn't find the right ankle for me but man that keyboard is so pleasant and silent to type on.

Getting harder and harder to hold on to my tablet as a note taking machine in class it does the job well but android is a mobile OS first...

If that was the case I would own a 2016 MBP, I don't and for good reason. Some are moving to the Surface Book as it`s the portable that meets their needs, pouring scorn on it won't change the facts...

Personally I think Microsoft will respond very well with Surface Pro 5 & Surface Book 2, as they are listening to their customers. Surface Book is Microsoft's first attempt at the notebook, nor is it too shabby now they have the drivers sorted. For the first time ever I am looking forward to the Microsoft events in 2017, as for the Apple events doubt I will even watch. I don't need thinner, I want great innovation, usability & practicality, and that undefinable WOW factor that Apple has lost, not more disappointment.

Agreed it's al very well having a design that works but to sit on refreshes and hone in on a basic shape format for so long in this genera of laptops is dull however nice/well built MBP are.

I though your previous price comparison to 13" ntbMBP showed a very small $ delta yet with all the extra potential functionality of the SB as a bonus and IRL test vs synthetic benchmarks showed only marginal performance increases and were limited to some special cases only and not always in the MBP favour

Well they only recently released a $4,000 desktop computer with really average components including a dog slow moving parts hard drive that everyone is moaning about in reviews. Even Windows fan boys like Paul Thurrott think it was bizarre they didn't just go with all SSD options. I mean who would care if they had to pay $200-$400 more for vastly better system performance?

I concede Microsoft are trying new things and have become more innovative in recent years. But still, they are making some really bad product decisions including a new push to embed more ads in the operating system - something again the fans like Thurrott and Brad Sams are deeply troubled about.

The very thought of unsolicited ads popping up in macOS disgusts me. So I don't know why any Windows users would put up with it.

I have no experience of the Studio, equally it`s spec is certainly not overwhelming, or of too much interest as is not portable, interesting all the same. Studio 2 might be of more relevance with the new Pen, although I suspect Microsoft will look to make the new Surface Pen backwards compatible similar to the new Surface Dial.

As for Ad's popping up none here? on any Windows 10 system I have used. I had to look it up on the web, seems to be MicroSoft related suggestions that are optional, clearly my systems are set to off.

I am also sceptical of much of the internet as it's in some's own interest to generate site traffic. From my understanding Thurrott has been beating on the Surface Book endlessly, yet I and others have had zero issue, doubt mine is special, as some have already pointed out he likely has a faulty unit, equally it serves purpose to generate traffic for his site.

Right now my Surface Book is with me in Papua new Guinea on a heavy engineering project, as ever it remains stable & reliable; no BSOD, no sleep issues, no "hot bags" no battery drains etc. my other notebook on this job is a 2015 M5 rMB running OS X, with the Surface Book being the more stable of the two.

Whilst I agree at $3.5k for the mid range Studio seems to have disappointing specs for the base unit given the unbeatable best in class screen.

I can only presume once you remove the cost of screen and external devices ~$1350 does not buy you much IE last years gaming spec, maybe for another $400 you could of had more up to date components but presumably the same story with many OEM's it was stifled by availability at conception date, not unlike MBP CPU for example

The good news it meets it's objectives, the drive and SSD can be upgraded but as you note maybe once your at this price point what's a few more dollars, something MS must of considered and we are not aware of.

Ads never seen them must be a Win10 haters spin along with the other paranoid comments that proliferate click bait

You mean like an iMac?

Seriously the same complaints about the Studio can be levied against the iMac. I agree the Studio is over priced but like the iMac its greater then the sum of its parts.

Microsoft is swinging for the fences and been designing some fantastic computers with some really cool technology. On the other hand, we get a thinner laptop with a touchbar that is inferior to a touch screen. Then move on to the Mac Pros and Mac Minis and we see Apple has left those machines withering on the vine for years.

I'm not against Apple, but I do think we're seeing more innovation coming from MS then Apple. Apple is fixated on Emojis (just visit an apple store and you'll see emojis plastered all over the walls and as screen savers), where as MS is rolling out some great ideas. Not all of them will be hits but at least they're trying.

They are being tested in the new insider builds. They've also hired a guy back with a specific role of looking for new revenue opportunities now they are selling fewer Windows licenses, and Windows 10 is the last major release. So you can expect a lot more of this kind of thing moving forwards.

I thought this place was called Mac Rumors, not PC rumors. I for one would wish that people who are discussing their purchases of windows products would take it to a Windows forum and leave here. This place is supposed to be for the discussion of Apple products. That's why I came back here. But now I find that its polluted with discussions that have nothing to do with to title of the forum.

Thankfully that's not how we all see it, MR has always been open to free discussion, given this thread is in the Alternatives to iOS and iOS Devices pretty much given we will not be discussing Apple's product here, equally as many of us still own & use and will likely to continue to purchase from Apple, have more open minds to see and explore the alternatives a common interest grows. If not happy with that you can always request the moderators to create an Alternative to macOS and macOS devices forum. As with all, no one is compelling you to view the thread and the OP is very clear on the subject matter.

If you want to only hear the good about Apple, pop over to Apple's own support forums where most negative content is removed, here on MR we are open to free speech, opinion and even choice of hardware, one of many reasons why MR is so very popular...

As Larry the Cable says: Now that's funny right there...
As others have pointed out just actually read the title of the forum.

I just..... ehh.... I've owned every Surface Pro and Windows just..... sucks!

Surface Book is OK but at that price point OK is not good enough. You need to be beating the MacBook Pro at that price, and unfortunately both the hardware and software doesn't come close to what Apple has to offer.

I find Windows and Mac OS one and the same, honestly. I used Windows growing up, I use it at work, and now I use Mac OS at home. I really don't have a preference for one or the other. So I always find myself a little surprised/interested/possibly ignorant when I see posts like these.

So I want to ask you two -- why do you dislike Windows? I'd really like to know. Maybe there is something that you know that I don't.

1. I'm a developer and Windows is not unix based, has weird line endings, and uses backward slashes. It's annoying for me to set all my stuff up to work on windows, and for my job I would even have to run VMs and stuff. I always feel annoyed at this because my SP4 would be awesome if I could use it for work

2. It's buggy. My SP4 currently has two annoying bugs. One, since the last firmware update, the fan runs too much. Two, Metro IE currently has a bug where TLS 1.2 doesn't work properly so some sites (including ALL google websites) don't work. Then there's weird bugs like how DP 1.2 displays don't work properly for me, and actually crash windows. How I turned off Windows Hello and yet randomly when I boot it sometimes activates itself anyway. I find that there's lots of random freezes in programs in Windows that I don't experience in OS X.

3. ITS UGLY! A personal preference, but I think Windows is ugly as heck. Font rendering is ugly, win32 apps are ugly.

4. Battery sucks. I've owned every Surface and many Windows laptops and battery has always sucked compared to the several Macbooks I have owned

Those of you who use a BaseQ and sd card, when disconnecting the clipboard do you first manually eject the sd card?

Sorry to here your experiencing problems I have not had any fan issues (staying on) for over a year

MS is not responsible for bad programmes from third parties

Else

Personal preferences not being dragged down that old route :)

SP4 battery is on the low side SB is the one to go for these days even compared to 2016 MBP that crown has slipped :D

My SP4 was off and randomly turned on this morning. Didn't touch it, didn't access it via network boot or anything... I guess it just decided it missed me and wanted to turn on.

I like my Surface, but the amount of totally random bugs with Windows never ceases to amaze me. Mac OS is far from perfect, but Windows is in a whole new world of weird if you ask me.

The SB is only a dual core, so it should have way better battery than the maxed out quad core macbook btw. I don't think the original SB does, but I think the new SB probably has more battery than the new MB.

This is part of he problem as there is far more things you can throw at Win10 opposed to MacOS the first instance is too blame MS

I not saying all your problems are related to this you certainly have something strange going on :)

Some of the untouchables in The MAC camp have been eroded and disappeared completely like battery supremacy and only the track Pad really remains by the slimmest of margins which are more a factor of OS than physical IMO

I agree you need to get your SP4 sorted to maximise its usefulness to you but you only have to read MR to see issues some users also have with their new MBP, nobody is perfect or immune :D

It is always a good idea to do an eject but I have to admit that I have just removed it many times with no problems. You would run into problems if it was reading or writing.
Since I don't get the removal warning I thought maybe the software detach process somehow took care of it. My Itunes and Groove music libraries are on my sd card. After detaching, both seamlessly switch to the internal library folders then switch back when reattached..

Yep, it is done automatically and the device recognizes the memory card perfectly.

Just make sure it is not in use when removing and it should not ever be a problem.

I've owned every single Surface Pro since the SP2 so problems like this aren't just things I can personally fix. Future Windows updates and firmware updates will fix these issues, however they will also introduce brand new bind blowing issues which confusingly slip past the quality control team. It has always worked this way with the Surface lineup.

Don't get me wrong, Apple has their own major ****ups, like how they can't ship a product line that doesn't have a crippling image retention or GPU problem, but Mac OS is still far better for battery and far more stable in my experiences than Windows.

MacOS is more stable and feels more polished and streamlined.

Windows is much more buggy, uglier and feels like a discount OS.

Not of recent for me my Surface Book is far more stable than any Mac I currently own, as for the look & feel Microsoft are moving in a good direction, nor is it as easy for them to flip the switch given the extended legacy support many of it's users depend on. Microsoft is a software company, Apple is a consumer electronics company with both having differing driving forces behind them.

As for the Surface Pro, sorry no real advice as never owned one, might be worth downloading and installing the latest driver package from MS or start over from scratch.

Most people who slam Windows have had bad experiences, me included, are talking about past usage. However during the last year Microsoft has really stepped up with Windows 10. Time to upgrade your knowledge base folks.

I'll answer for him... because it's not apple obviously lol

Exactly. I always discount anyone that has a footer on their profile that only lists products from one company. Obvious bias.

Anyway I have a Mac Pro running MacOS and Windows 10 (using bootcamp) and I use w10 80% of the time because I just find it better. MS have stepped up their game, w10 is not your fathers Windows and it just works really really well. Interesting that I get about 30 minutes more battery time on the mac running windows than mac os!

Don't know if it means anything but several SB models are sold out or no stock on Microsoft's store. The one TB model of both models, that's surprising to me, wonder what the use case is to need that much storage. Maybe it's just all those Apple converts who always buy the maxed models cause they can :)
