This is why I recommend getting a separate articles policy for laptopsbfrom your insurance agency.

Even though it is very expensive, I tried doing some repairs due to water damage, and ended up just having to have Apple fix it (which meant I spent Apples quote and 250 USD)

I'm really grateful to all of you for spending some time in replying to my questions.

I'd get it fixed from apple.

Lesson learnt:
1. I'll never put my electronics in the overhead compartment.
2. I'll get my laptop insured if I'm not as careful as I should be.
3. I'll consider the price of spare parts before I buy a machine.

Thank You.

Zephyr,
That's very unfortunate and it's definitely a lesson learnt. Also here is a tip for when you travel in the future with a laptop. Hopefully this hasn't change in the past few years since I haven't gotten in an airplane in a while. Carry your laptop in a laptop bag with a shoulder strap. Most airlines don't consider this as an extra carry on bag. This will let you place your carry on bag on the overhead compartment and keep the laptop bag with you at all times. I usually put have it next to me in the seat or put in under the chair with the strap anchored to my leg just in case it slides if there is some turbulence.

My macbook was in a laptop sleeve and inside a laptop bag. I did make sure nothing would.

Have you heard the expression: "the squeaky wheel gets the grease"? I would ask both the airline and apple for a better resolution to your problem. If they haven't already escalated your claim to higher levels, they should.

But if everything fails, you are making a wise choice to go ahead with the repair.

Good luck.

Late 2013 MBP Retina replace Model: A1502

The thread has been very helpful,

I also recently dropped the new MBP, it landed flat on the feet from about 4 feet up, computer works fine, but the screen is toast. the glass seems only cracked on the lower right corner, but the LCD is cracked throughout the view space, and there is about a 1 inch and growing black vertical bar with red and green vertical lines. the rest of the display works fine. i had to move my icons over so i could use the computer , but the spotlight and time and date, battery indicator icon, and wifi icon in the top right corner are unreadable.

in essence, what I learned is that we can not repair these, we must replace the entire upper case/screen. in essence it is just a bolt off the old, and bolt on the new.

i purchased the laptop in April 2014, but the computer says Late 2013 Model A1502. why doesn't it indicate 2014 ? it was a CTO maxed out. was it taken from old stock?

IMHO, it does not require apple service , or other costly alternatives if you can get into the case and undo the screws, and airport, video, and FaceTime wires. seems pretty straight forward and probably an hour and half worth of work. 2 hours if you are meticulous.

i agree vendors online are a crapshoot, you never know what you are getting, but what do you think of this vendor?

They claim to have OEM original parts shipping from Taiwan worldwide. it makes sense.. Taiwan is original parts? i do not know, it looks pretty real to me.

The details indicate it is original , unused, in original packaging from manufacturer. The picture looks like it is the case with the barcode over the apple logo.

I wonder why they do not say the word "Retina" in the Product name cut and pasted below: But it does say compatible. Maybe just a play on words?

Product name
Full LCD Screen Assembly
Compatible model
Pro Retina 13" A1502 Year 2013
Product condition
New and original parts
Compatible order NO.
Late 2013 (ME864, ME865, ME866)
Compatible EMC NO.

That revision was introduced in late-2013, hence the name. Decode the serial number and it will indicate the year and week it was manufactured. There's a couple of websites out that there will do that for you.

The mid-2014 MacBook Pros were only introduced sometime in July 2014. All rMBPs made before July 2014 are considered as late-2013.

I know this. liquidousr states he bought in April and it's an A1502, therefore it has to be a late-2013 model as I stated.

Why the correction?

I am contacting the ebay seller of the new OEM screens, will see what he said.
I looked over his feed back, and saw 2 ebay members who purchased the A1502 screens, and their feed back was that it was installed and working well. Fast shipping, great communication, good price.

however, on the ebay add, there is a watermark for "Hannsinfo.com", the manufacturer of the screens i suppose. when i visited the HansInfo website: I am unable to find a Replacement product for the A1502.

http://www.hannsinfo.com.tw/macbook/

however, the ebay ad indicates he is selling the replacement for the A1502 and members are indicating they are installed. go figure.

My macbook was in a laptop sleeve and inside a laptop bag. I did make sure nothing would happen to it. The air hostess said it would be unsafe for it to be with me during take-off and landing.
Not sure where you placed your bags/laptop but you can actually place it in the front seat pocket or under the front seat.
Therefore, I put it up there and when I put it up there, the overhead compartment was entirely empty. It wasn't my fault because people carry bigger handbags then they are allowed to and nobody checks them.
It’s not your fault but it’s your responsibility if anything gets damage. Espcially when it’s something that is easily broken or high value. You should have been more careful. It’s also not other passengers/air hostess responsibility that you have something that breaks easily in the overhead compartment.

But if I put my stuff in the overhead compartment and I have the seat belt on then it is the stewards responsibility that nothing happens to my stuff because when I did put it up there I made sure that nothing would happen to it. I can't really go about reading the airline policies and taking the airline to court.
It is NOT air hostess’s responsibility to make sure nothing happens to any passengers’ stuff. They have other duties to do and can’t look at every passenger’s stuff.
I never did expect apple to fix it for free and I do realise that somehow I was responsible for the damage even though I don't consider myself to be at any fault. This is quite evident from the fact that I'm asking for suggestions to get my wonderful machine fixed.
I wouldn’t say it’s whose fault but you definitely have the responsibility for not taking good care of your personal items. For instance, you could wait other passengers to put the stuff in the compartment and squeeze your bags in there so nothing heavy is on top of it. Or just place it on the floor of the front seat.
Just because I live in a third world country doesn't mean that I should pay any extra to get a new machine or to get it fixed. Mac prices were dropped after the introduction of the new haswell macbooks all over the world but we never saw a decrease here in India. This is unfair and people here shouldn't be treated this way.
I am surprise that you are whining of this because you’ve been living there. Do you not know the reason why stuff there is more expensive? Frankly, world is never fair. Brazil didn’t get Sony’s PS3 after like 1-2 years later and the price is way higher. Cars/petrol in Europe is generally more expense than USA.
I learnt my lesson. I'll get it fixed.
Good. Learn to protect your properties and still stay within the rules.

Got reply back from the eBay vendor. He apologized that his supplier website is not up to date but infact they do have OEM ORIGINAL replacement parts for the A1502 model screen. It is a full assembly not screen replacement . So bolt off bolt on ..

Plan on ordering one soon and will let you know how it works out! Supposedly these few places are OEM suppliers to apple.

Yes, it is a full assembly replacement. However, I have done several of these replacements on the rMBP, and it really is not as easy as "bolt off, bolt on".

It will take around 15 minutes - IF you know what you are doing, have the correct tools and everything is prepared beforehand.

BUT it is a really fiddly and delicate job, and it is very easy for something to go wrong.
