So, its looking more like the watch. Just for kicks, flip it over and let it read on the underside of your wrist. See if its any different.

I did that 2 days ago when I was going for a walk. The watch was stuck in the 60's but my chest strap was showing 130's. I flipped the watch around and it jumped up to 140. I didn't keep it there long enough to get more readings.

I went for another walk today and had similar (off) results. Just like my other walks it looked like the HRM was accurate. But a couple minutes in and the readings dropped to the mid-60's (usually 65). It stayed there for a couple minutes then jumped back up to the 130's. After a minute or two it was back down to 60's. Looking back at the data in the Health app, it looks like there are more readings during my workout in the 60's than in the actual range.

After today's workout I can narrow it down to either the Workout app or possibly something with bluetooth. A couple times during my walk I ended the workout in the workout app (when it was reading 65 bpm). I would then check my HR using the glance and it would jump up to what my heart rate actually was (according to my chest strap). I'd start another workout and after a couple minutes (or sooner) it was back down to the 60's. End the workout, check my HR with the glance, and it'd jump back up to what it actually was.

After my walk I did some brief testing. I started a workout and compared it to the reading from my chest strap. This time it was accurate (within 1-2 bpm). The only things different was my BT headphones were off and I was just sitting there. I did a couple very brief (like a minute) tests where I walked around with my headphones on and off. It seems like the bluetooth headphones were causing it?? The tests were too short to really know for sure. I'll have to do some more testing. But the whole thing has been very frustrating as I want things to just work.
 
Hey guys, as a 21 year old with a few minor heart complications and HBP I thought it would be nice to know my heart rate while I work out, but I'm getting REALLY sporadic numbers.

Im going from 102 - 76 in a matter of a minute and sometimes its even worse (down to the 40's from 100)

Am I doing something wrong? Its nice and snug on my wrist (not too tight)

move the watch up a little higher on your wrist. That's what I do when I exercise to get an accurate reading.
 
Yeah from what I have read the higher on the list the better for accuracy. So far I have only got one reading I know was messed up. During a ten minute check it got a reading of 202 somehow. The rest of the time it has seemed pretty accurate.
 
I just got my watch last night. One of the reasons for purchase was for the HRM.
I had not too long ago, an A-Fib episode. Although my last two electrocardiograms show that my sinus rhythm is back to normal, I just wanted to err on the side of caution.
I also have a pulse oximeter, but carrying it around is a pain.
So this morning when I got up, I put on the watch and fired up the HRM. I then, also put on my oximeter. Both matching and gave a resting rate of 75.
During the course of the morning. I have left the watch on and have it linked to the Health app on my phone and show minimal, if any, large fluctuations.
As another poster mentioned, make sure you have it snug enough on your wrist and position it to be the most comfortable.
As the iFixit teardown suggested, the device inside is actually a pulse oximeter, but the oxygen sensor has been disabled. I would presume they had some challenges and could maybe only get FDA approval at this point for the HRM.

I also made the experience that my Beats Wireless Headphones disturb The accuracy of my heartrate readings. When switched on the readings where between 60 and 70 bpm while exercising( usually Im between 130 and 160 bpm. As I turned the headphones off, my heartrate readings go back up to where they should be. Very disappointing...
 
To me it seems, it could be a contact issue, rather than a sensor issue. Can anyone keep the band tight for continuous contact during exercise and report back if it is an issue?

I have the Milanese Loop, and it keeps the band very snug. So I don't think contact is the issue.

Perhaps it is position. On today's walk, again, it started ok then dropped to the 60's. I moved it higher on my arm and seemed to get a good reading again. But it's not comfortable for me to wear it that high, it feels weird.

Since I thought the BT headphones could be responsible I also turned them off. It didn't seem to bring the heart rate back up to normal. I then paired them with the watch instead of my phone. I also didn't wear my BT chest strap HRM today so as to minimize BT interference or congestion.

Tomorrow I think I'm going to try to wear it in the regular position and not use any BT items. Will be hard not having my music, but for the sake of science I'll suffer.
 
I have a pacemaker that's set on 60 bpm to 130 bpm the heart monitor on the watch said my heart rate was205 bpm and 35 bpm that's incorrect my pacemaker will not let it get that high
Maybe she didn't want to get her heart rate too high on the Apple Watch by typing

The 2 year old thread you bumped was talking about a bug where the Apple watch will show weirdly high BPM even when people did nothing. The joke was about the watch not trying to insult you.

How in the world was the person suppose to know you had a pacemaker? I mean really. Obviously the joke was about the watch. Might want to chill out a little.

I have never been able to depend on the HR feature on any of my Apple Watches. No matter where on the wrist or how tight it is, I can be running and look at my watch and my HR is not even shown or is some ridiculous number like 40bpm.

I gave up and went to the chest strap of not worry about it.

I have Gamins and Fitbits that will track my pulse even when loose.
