Nope, I always had a case before in all 3 of my previous iphones.
Mostly for protection so it doesnt make any difference.

Yeah, this guy can't stop with the trolling on these forums. Sad really.

The phone doesn't need a bumper, but some people (including me) feel it provides just enough protection without making the phone bulky. I can throw my phone on a table and not worry about scratching it, and the bumper's grippy edges makes it nearly impossible to accidentally slip off of anything.
