I can’t delete bookmarks in Safari

Safari 7.1.7
I want to delete some bookmarks and it’s not working. I go to the bookmarks menu, I choose edit , then click delete either from menu or right clicking on the bookmark and it doesn’t do anything

what to do then??

Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks

Highlight the one you want to delete
Right click, select Delete
or just hit the Delete key on your keyboard

Another option would be to drag them to the trash.

none of those options worked... but I restarted the laptop and then for some reason I was able to delete bookmarks
