I Purchased a MacBookPro about 6months ago and Around late July I started having this problem. I can't install anything onto the computers hard drive. If I try to install anything the hard drive icon appears on my taskbar like usual, except that it remains grey and bounces up and down. Eventually I get the rainbow wheel and my computer freezes up. If I try to run the software update, I only get the software update icon on my taskbar, and it again jumps up and down until my computer freezes. Everything else works fine, except when I try to install to my hard drive.

EDIT: Yes I have repaired permissions, there was no problem there, and I tried contacting Apple online and through the phone but none of there "official" help was any good. They mostly just referred to to my "locale Apple specialist" which is almost an hour from my house.
I Have all the install DVDs and manuals, and Im running Mac OS X, but not the latest version due to me not being able to install any updates.
