I only have a bluetooth keyboard.
I turned off the bluetooth settings and went to sleep.
When I tried to login, I cant.
So obviously, the bluetooth setting remains the same wither you restart it or turn it off.

The only solution I have right now is to buy a wired keyboard. That’s just sucks that I have to spend more when I should have not to if only there is a virtual keyboard available by default. (I know it can be turned on)

sorry if this is ranting to you, Im just pissed right now.

If you need a wired USB keyboard, and you don't know anyone that might have a spare, or let you use theirs... Wired USB keyboards can be pretty cheap -- $20 or so for a generic keyboard. There's no need to get an Apple-brand keyboard, most any keyboard (even one with a Windows key :D ) will work for what you need. You might find usable, used keyboards at shops that typically sell donated items, like Goodwill.

(I guess you don't need to hear: Don't turn off your Bluetooth card when you are using bluetooth devices.

OK, I was going to point and say "Ha ha!", but then remembered something that might actually be constructive:

If it's a Magic Keyboard, connect it with a USB cable and it should work like a wired keyboard.

Not sure about 3rd party keyboards - suspect not - but it's worth a try.

Otherwise, it's a pain but a wired keyboard and mouse (the cheapest and cruddiest will do) are useful to have in your cupboard.

I bought a seven dollar wired mouse to eliminate the problem that you’re having. A bummer but it works

hello guys. Yeah.. i know my solution is to buy a keyboard but this could be prevented if the virtual keyboard is in the login by default right?

This should be the most feasible one, if you use Apple keyboard (which always provided if you have iMac)

So you could enter the password with your Bluetooth mouse... oh, wait...

Just to prove my earlier point, my Bluetooth is off and I'm typing this using a Magic Keyboard w/number pad and using a Magic Trackpad 2, both connected using Lightning to USB cables. They work fine in wired mode (actually, kudos to Apple for this nice "hidden feature"). Of course, if you've got a Tragic Mouse it'll be lying on its back with it's legs in the air at this point...

If you're reliant on 3rd Party bluetooth keyboards and pointing devices I'd highly recommend having a cheap'n'cheerful wired keyboard and mouse tucked away somewhere anyhow - useful for troubleshooting, booting into recovery mode etc.

What is a bit odd is that MacOS will let you turn off Bluetooth while you're using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse without Nanny Apple at least asking whether you're sure.

This suggestion may or may not help.

Does the bt keyboard have rechargeable batteries, and perhaps a USB cable to plug in to charge them?
If so, try connecting that to the Mac and see if it will power it on.

If still a no-go...
I'd strongly advise you to spend a little money and pick up a WIRED USB keyboard, either new or used.
You don't have to use it all the time.
But now and then, it could come in very handy.

As in a moment like... "right now"...

Reminds me of an old text-based adventure game on the ZX Spectrum, in the 80s. It was The Hobbit and, obviously, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic. In the starting room, Bilbo’s lounge in Bag End, there was a chest. You could enter the commands; open the chest, climb inside the chest, close the chest. You then couldn’t do anything because it was dark and you couldn’t see. You had to restart the game. Sorry, just made me chuckle in the similarity of painting yourself into a corner.

The virtual KB function exists but it needs to be turned on before hand. When you have not logged in then of course you can’t access that in System Preferences.

This is actually a more common questions for MacBook owners where their KBs that broke.

If you have a Mac laptop, then perhaps you can use Screen Sharing or Remote Management to login to your Mac Studio and use System Preferences/Settings to switch bluetooth back on. (This is why I always configure Remote Management on my Apple computers before doing anything else.) Or you could also use ssh to login to a terminal app on the Mac Studio from the laptop, then use terminal commands to restart the bluetooth.

I often use VNC from a Linux laptop or Remote Management from a macOS laptop to login in to a computer that doesn't have a display attached, then use the VNC/Remote Management connection to access the GUI on the computer without a display/keyboard/trackpad/mouse attached.

Good luck, Solouki

I had to buy a keyboard, wired, once because I could not do a new install of MacOS with a bluetooth keyboard... I bought a dirt cheap one at Microcenter for $5.

If you want a more elegant solution. I recently bought one of these and it will work via bluetooth, via a USB dongle, or crucially in this case, via the USB charging cable.
