Apple decided you don't need to open it up under High Sierra...I have five applications that are now dead meat since High Sierra..

iPhoto opens and runs just fine on my 2015 macbook air. Running latest High Sierra. Seems to take longer to open and close though than it did with earlier versions of MacOS, but has always been slow. My photo library of 58000 images is on a usb3 external 1T drive.

IMHO the replacement of iPhoto with the much poorer featured Photos is just one example of Apple's neglect of the Mac systems.

I don’t have a problem with iphoto on my 2012 iMac.you have have the 9.6 version.im using the latest version of high Sierra

The version of iPhoto you have is too old.

Starting with Yosemite or El Capitan (can't remember which), you can ONLY use the LAST VERSION of iPhoto, which is 9.6.1.
NO EARLIER VERSION WILL RUN.

Apple does not make it easy to get this version.

You can try this:
1. Delete or move the older version of iPhoto from your applications folder
2. Go to the app store, to "purchases", and see if you can re-download iPhoto
3. IF the app store lets you do this, you should receive version 9.6.1, which does run.

IF THE ABOVE DOES NOT WORK:
You can still run iPhoto 9.6.1, but you're going to have to get it from "unauthorized sources".
It CAN be "found and downloaded", and it works.

Part of me wonders what would happen if Apple just stopped all development on OS X a little down the line and just focused everything on their popular-@$$ iDevices running FisherPr- I mean iOS.

Why wouldn't they? They obviously don't care, so why let their near-dead horse continue to suffer? From what I've seen, High Sierra seems to be one of the most unstable releases of OS X ever, meanwhile you're gonna tell me it welcomes a 2009 MacBook, but blocks out a 2009 Mac Pro? Under the hood improvements my @$$...

Meanwhile, the iPhone still has the sleep/wake button on the side of the device.

Apple has been incompetent since 2014.
