that would reak havok for dev's.

Maybe a 7'' would be btter. (3.5x2) so just double the resolution :)

No. All they would have to do is make the pixels a bit larger and continue the iPod current resolution so no change for the devs, it will still be the standard "retina" resolution. You can't blow it up too big so it has to be 6 inches or less, plus that's the size needed for it to be pocketable

Macbook has options Why not ipad???

That's a silly mantra. As if you're denied "choice" because Apple's not producing a 7" tablet. If the Pad doesn't work for you then you have a choice not to buy it, and if you have a burning need for the 7" form factor then there are "choices" for you from other manufacturers. Does Apple's business decision to stick with iPod/iPad form factors really deny the world "choice"?

With that type of logic Apple should get rid of 13" & 15" macbooks and only offer the 11" air & 17" macbook pro... anybody looking for an in between size should check the competition... ARE YOU SERIOUS:eek:... the 9.7 ipad is fine but some of us would like the option of a 7" ipad. The screen size would be easier on the eyes than a ipod for movies, and i could actual put it in my back pocket oppose to babying it around.

DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS... hopefully SJ will take note.:D

I actually used a 7 inch android tablet for quite a while, and it definitely had it's uses. The form factor was very convenient for use in-care, or just carrying around in a jacket pocket and what not.

Having both the 7inch and an iPad, they both have their plusses and minuses. I really like the Samsung Galaxy Tab (but it's pricing structure is just horrid. Maybe when they get to $199-$299 without contract). Before I got the iPad I was close to getting a Nook Color and rooting it, but I've held off for now.

What's illogical is the argument that Apple's denying choice by not producing a 7" device. If Apple thought there was a profitable market from a 7" device they'd be all over it.

I don't know what type of pants you're wearing that can fit a 7" tablet..

Why would anyone want an iPhone that has three more inches of screen? That makes no sense. The gap between iPhone and Notebook has been filled with the iPad. There's no need for variations in size.

Not for me personally.

Only thing I can stand to do on a screen that size is read e-books, and I have my Kindle for that and will stick with it as I prefer e-ink for reading.

7" screen I find to small for newspaper or magazine or comic reading, too small for web surfing, too small for video etc.

Not saying there isn't a market for a 7" ipad, just that I wouldn't want one personally.

Hell, I'd like something with a screen an inch or so bigger than the iPads as it would be better for documents in portrait orientation vs having to do half page view in landscape for many now. I don't care about portability much as I'm not one to lug my gadgets around and don't care about having internet access everywhere etc. I just use my gadgets home and the office and when traveling (and then I have my briefcase so size isn't an issue.

I'd love to have a 7" iPad to carry around the hospital. It'd fit in my pocket :D

Im with you. But unfortunately Steve Jobs said no to 7" and now all his followers are dismissing it as stupid without really thinking it through (The same way they've all dismissed the versatility of a quality Autofocus camera on the iPad or the lack of backlit keyboard on the new Air.)

For me, I never took my iPad out of the house because the size is even too big for my purse, but I've been so jealous of Kindle users who seem to be able to fit that sized device with them everywhere. If Apple really doesnt want to make a smaller size then I wish they'd at least trim that bezel down because it's unnecessarily space consuming.

Having a 7" tablet is about the only way the ipad's competitors can differentiate themselves, since they can't seem to produce a 10" for a lesser price.
I like the 10" tablet. It's big enough to have full-size web browsing and reading experience, but it's small enough to be more portable than most of Apple's notebook line--with the possible exception of the Air.

While I fully agree that a 1024x768 7" iPad would be somewhat harder to use given the smaller screen elements (as Steve Jobs himself said), I sometimes wouldn't mind the enhanced mobility of a smaller tablet.

My wife has a color Nook and I wouldn't mind an iOS device that size, too.

Definitely I would not use that size for a flagship device, but a 7" iPad with last year's A4 processor and a 1024x768 screen wouldn't be half bad at all!

This reminds me of something I heard way back in the Newton vs Palm days.

A Palm Pilot is the perfect size (small, pocketable) EXCEPT when you are using it.

A Newton is a terrible size (too big, bulky) EXCEPT when you are using it.

I think 7" tablets would fit into the Palm side of this. It would be more pocketable, easier to carry with you everywhere but when using it the smaller screen would be a negative.

1024x768 retina display on 6"/7" iPad Mini

iPad mini, there is a possibility ...

not sure, how the user interface will work though ...

and the price is the question? how long it can go? $350?

I see just one solid use case for a 7" tablet.

Detachable in-dash tablet for navigation, media, vehicle apps, etc.

Right now, car companies are getting $2000 for built-in touchscreen navigation units that are basically $2000 pieces of crap. Phisher-Price graphics, maps that are 5+ years out of date, media integration so bad it makes a mockery of the words "media" and "integration".

And to top it off, your paying that $2000 for something that lives its whole miserable life, IN THE DASH.

Not saying that this would be enough reason (and sales) for Apple to produce a 7" iPad, but it would be a tempting deal if they did.

I have a 4.3" phone a 7" tablet would be pretty useless. I would just rather carry around my phone. The 9.7" screen of the iPad is great.

Of course the flip side to your comments would be: "if KiiyKatta really doesn't want to get a larger screen then I wish they'd at least get a bigger purse because it's unnecessarily small"

Just sayin...

(to answer the OP and for what it's worth, i personally don't want a smaller ipad and i actually carry mine around in my satchel)

^You're not going to get very far in this crowd of fanboys:p

Plus, Steve said it himself, "dead on arrival"

I agree with Steve, the iPad screen is the perfect size. Maybe you would rather it have a smaller bezel? I know I would, maybe a half inch vs the almost one inch?

^+10000

Why are car navi's such GARBAGE!?!?!?! (when you compare it to our iPhones/iPads)
Not trying to hijack just venting:mad:

Steve said it himself, "dead on arrival"

He said the same thing about video on the ipod right up until the ipod touch/iphone came out.

Bottom line around here is that it is a horrible idea that no one in their right mind would ever buy... until Apple makes one, then it is the next 'must have' product.

My question would be how big the 7" market is. I've used a few and they always felt like inbetween products. They are too big to be pocketable and too small to be a real home tablet. Yes they are mobile and makes great paperback reader replacement, but how many people will buy it in addition to the smartphones? I can imagine a bigger iPod Touch, but I suspect it'll be smaller than 7"

As other have pointed out, other than the ebook, I think the most fitting target market of the 7" form factor is the car navigation panel.

Yes, 7" is a nice mid-size for carrying around. Access the hospital website, medical apps, calendar, take notes.

If Apple doesn't make one to fill this size niche, then consider the HTC Flyer, which is supposed to show up soon.

You can even take screenshots of documents you're looking at, record a voice note, write comments or draw highlights on them with the active pen, and store the result in Evernote.
