Should I wait for the new Apple hardware? I was getting ready to upgrade from my G3 to a G5.

This new hardware, I wonder if this will be a special machine that runs the Mac OS or are they going to allow you to load the OS on a third party PC?

If so I'll build a winbox and hopefully be able to run the mac OS later.
1. Upgrading's up to you. I've just upgraded to a G5, and I'm still happy despite the fact that the PPC is being fased out. I'd probably say upgrading's still a good idea, especially as you're still on a G3 - sure the intel's are going to be better but this is what you get when you buy a computer - it's ALWAYS going to go out of date.

2. Mac OS X will not work on anything but Apple-built Macintoshes, such as the mac mini, powerbook, ibook, powermac, imac etc. (unless they later chose to license the software out, which happened in the early-mid 90's... read more here.)

Hope that helps :)

I for one am exited for this transition. I really want to see a machine that I think might run faster than the machines right now. The good thing for me is that in a couple of years my ibook should be obsolete, and I will be looking foward to recieving my first macintel.

Transition III is a win for Apple, a win for Intel, a win for mobility, a win for cost-reduction and a win for the long-term future of those who like to compute in style.

I like how the naysayers complain that this transition will kill Apple. They'll also tell you that buying a Mac for the next 1-2 years is utterly pointless.

You know what will REALLY kill Apple? Not Intel - its people not buying Macs.

Yeah after I saw the Keynote my fear was replaced with excitement becuase these new computers especaly (sp) the PB will be awsome! I think this was a great move for apple. The stock has gone back up today now that wallstreet has stoped spazing out to.

Edit: I am really getting frustrated at people that don't keep up with the news that think apple is going to be flood with viruses and Dells will be able to run them. If they were to actually read around this site or appleinsider people would be much clamer than they are right now.

Agreed. I was apprehensive at first, but after watching the keynote, I feel a little better. Obviously it's not about what's going on now, it's about the future. And unfortunetly it looks like IBM and Freescale don't have much planned for Apple's future chips. I've read that they looked at their options with AMD or the Cell procs, but there were problems with both. AMD has some issues with their production facilities like IBM, and the Cell isn't as good for complex computer processes as you'd think. Intel was their best choice, so I can't say I blame them. Obviously we'd rather have better G4/5s, but since that ain't gonna happen, I'm glad Apple has at least planned ahead to hedge their bets. So now they've been forced to pull out plan B (or C, as the case may be). The Pentium M will be great for laptops and the P5 should be acceptable for desktops.

This looks like it won't be too bad for developers, but I'm sure there will be hiccups. And I'm sure people will still buy Macs for the next year or 2, especially if they drop the prices and people still want to run their old software that may not work well with Rosetta. Then again, we're not really sure what the future holds for Apple. This could very easily be a good or bad thing.

And the one bad thing, though Apple will always be on par with PCs and should even be able to update more often, they will never again be faster than Wintels. :(

I dont care about Intel either, I wished they went w/ AMD instead but I do care about Apple. It the future Intel-equipped Apples still feels like an Apple then I'm all over it... Dont care how it runs, as long as it runs like an Apple.

For those who are worried about the transition, you don't have enough faith in Jobs. I seriously believe that he knows what he's doing and what's best for Apple. He's brought us this far hasn't he?

Just give it some time and let things settle a bit. Don't worry too much. Apple/Jobs will sort things out nicely.

I am seriously stoked about the new transisition. I think it will open the flood gates of all sorts of new possibilities for Apple. But one thing is still bothering me. I really don't care about the specs or anything right now seeing that its kinda pointless since next year or two years down the line its gonna be a far cry from a P4.

I'm just dying to know the new moniker on the chips and models. Are they gonna keep with the G series moniker and just call it the G6 or move to something like....

Something other than G. :p

They still might. Remember this is about laptops and future chips. If Intel drops the ball and AMD can deliver, not a problem.

All the freaking out by totally uninformed people has been driving me nuts, I'm not wasting my time with these people, so I've just been keeping pretty quiet about it. But yes, I agree completely. So another chip is under the hood, big deal, for the VAST amount of people it will make ABSOLUTELY no difference. At least now were can be more sure than ever that we WILL see a decent rate of development.

When I started thinking about the new Intel chips that are coming, only one concern came to mind. I hope there won't be an "Intel Inside" logo anywhere on a Mac or Powerbook. I don't see how that wouldn't look ugly. Maybe on the box it comes in. I'll allow that.
Hey, this is Apple. If they do the co-branding thing, it won't be a generic sticker, Ive will incorporate the logo so that it looks like it belongs there.

Now that they're (hopefully) done with wind tunnels, there should be a lot of room do do something more fun with the high end desktop cases, maybe even something that's a reasonable size again!

Please, can I come in too? I'm tired of people who simply haven't listened or read anything that's been said.

OK, My take:-

1) I don't care what processor it uses so long as it all still works.
2) I don't care if it's some stuff is emulated so long as it's reasonably fast.
3) I'd still buy a PPC Powermac as they're still very fast and great machines - maybe I'll get one cheaper?
4) I won't buy a powerbook as they're underpowered and not that much better than the ibooks. Just like before.

in more detail.

1) All the stuff you own still works and will continue to work.
2) Even if Apple sells a ton of Intel macs in the first year PPC macs will still outnumber them about 20:1
3) PPC macs will be supported for at least 4-5 years.
4) I know the emulator doesn't support Altivec code - this means hand-coded Altivec. If people used the Accelerate frameworks like Apple suggested then it still works as then it's in the OS and uses SSE on Intel macs.
5) OS 9 support is dead - Good
6) Cocoa is great and if you use that then as a developer you don't have many worries. Anything Apple writes, they port, so get using Core Data and the Cocoa bindings if you haven't discovered how cool they are already!
7) Yes, the PPC architecture was better designed - so was Betamax.
8) Get over it, it's happening and going around complaining about it ain't gonna change that. In the end the mac will still be a mac and act like a mac and you can be pretty sure Apple will do all they can to stop OS X running on a bloody Dell.

I like this thread, every other thread out there are hysteric, same questions over and over again and different answers all the time, but that doesn't matter because no one listens anyway!

Thank you! So much FUD out there right now. Most of it very ignorant.

I'm sad about this since I use a couple of OS9 apps. But I will adjust.

After reading most of the drivel on the other boards, it's nice to see this one! :D

I got to thinking...I wonder if the Intel chip used in the Mactel will be called the G6?

That would be an easy way to differentiate the use of Intel processors while keeping the simple naming scheme that Apple started.

Just thinking out loud.
