Ok so here is what i am thinking...

I was thinking about using someone's att account to pre order the iphone 4

Do they have to have a previous iphone account?

No, but be prepared to pay mega $$$. You'll either have to buy it off contract ($599) or buy it subsidized, pay the 1st months bill and then cancel and pay the ETF (~$600).

Which network do you want to take the iPhone to?

Why not just pre-order it yourself? What do you gain by having someone else order it for you? If you're planning on unlocking and putting it on another network, might be best to wait to see if an unlock is even doable by the iPhone Dev Team...

The ETF is $325 right now, I believe.

Just wait a few months, and see what other providers are offered. There are new threads today talking about possibly T-Mobile, which is already GSM supported.

yeah i will pay the full price i already know I just wanted to know if they needed to have the iphone plan.

I have it on tmobile... unlimited txt and talk + data plan for $64 monthly.. att cant beat that hehe...

that would suck.. i hope not lol.. let them go to verizon

No, you do not. But again, if you're planning on bringing it to T-Mobile I would wait until there is a known unlock available for iPhone 4. There's no guarantee that any unlock that works for the previous generation iPhones will work for the iPhone 4.

Maybe they can't beat it for voice + data + txt alone, but YOU HAVE TO ADD THE SUBSIDY in your price. That's about $300 stretched over 2 yrs. You can do the math, but I'm sure you already have if you're trying to get advice on not having to pay full price. And, what features are you missing like Voice Mail listing, etc.

i am constantly on wifi so 3g means nothing to me at the moment... tmobile has 3g.. you just have to pay 10 bucks extra

But the iPhone doesn't have the proper hardware to use T-Mobile's 3G network so you can't use it even if you wanted to.

Not the point. The 3G at&t uses isn't quite the same as the t-mobile 3g. They're both GSM, but the previous iPhones weren't compatible with T-Mobile 3G. Not sure if this one is or not.

So you can buy the iphone 4g without att account wtf? are you sure about that? that doesnt make sence.

I just want to have it to make sure they don't go out of stock on me

I'm positive there will be an unlock for it. there's no doubt in my mind bout that. apple wouldn't be that stupid. might take a few weeks but i dont care

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.1-update1; en-us; Nexus One Build/EPE54B) AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17)

You realize you'll only get edge speeds with the iPhone in the T-Mobile network

You can buy the iPhone 4G without being a current AT&T customer (I thought this was what you were asking). It seems that what you were really asking is if you need to sign up for AT&T service when you purchase the iPhone, which I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. If you're willing to pay a crapload of cash for it, you can get the iPhone 4 without the 2 year contract requirement, but you'll still need to sign up for AT&T service.

Don't be so confident about an unlock for the iPhone 4. Sure, the people that find the holes in the baseband are really really good at what they do, but it could potentially take them months to finally find an exploitable hole. No one will know for sure if an unlock is possible until the iPhone 4 is released.

You could also buy an european factory unlocked iphone, like from Italy (they will probably be priced at 726$ 16gb and 848$ 32gb).

So you don't have to unlock it and to crap yourself whenever a firmware update is out.

I don't know how warranty in the USA would work though. (for an iPhone bought in Italy)

Won't tolls make it more expensive to get an iPhone overseas?

Well, yes. I don't know about US tolls though.

Here in Italy tolls would be +29% on the price. (like, if I buy a Mac in the US and bring it here, I pay +29% at Italy borders)

Pretty bad actually. You are paying a lot for the phone upfront and loosing many of the features That make the iPhone a great phone not to mention AT&Ts new plans beat that.
