You can buy the iPhone 4G without being a current AT&T customer (I thought this was what you were asking). It seems that what you were really asking is if you need to sign up for AT&T service when you purchase the iPhone, which I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. If you're willing to pay a crapload of cash for it, you can get the iPhone 4 without the 2 year contract requirement, but you'll still need to sign up for AT&T service.

Don't be so confident about an unlock for the iPhone 4. Sure, the people that find the holes in the baseband are really really good at what they do, but it could potentially take them months to finally find an exploitable hole. No one will know for sure if an unlock is possible until the iPhone 4 is released.

They already have a hole

They have a hole in the 3GS baseband version from the iOS 4.0 GM release candidate. The version available to developers now may not be the final release version. There's also the chance that the baseband version on the iPhone 4 might be different than the one on the 3GS, which means that the same exploits may not exist in the iPhone 4 baseband. Like I said, don't assume anything until the iPhone 4 and iOS 4.0 are available to the public.

Thank you... that was my question... So I do need someone with a current iphone plan to purchase the phone for me.... that's all i needed to know

Pretty bad actually. You are paying a lot for the phone upfront and loosing many of the features That make the iPhone a great phone not to mention AT&Ts new plans beat that.

But i will gain it in the long-run actually... att 450 minute plan alone is $40 dollars... + data + messaging is not worth it... what features am i losing? only the 3g network... which i already mentioned i am ALWAYS ON WIFI

We'll see with the new plans but i will most likely not switch.. i rather pay full price. i would have to break my contract with tmobile which would cost me regardless.. and the iphone never loses its price if you keep it in good shape... i am basically selling my 2g for 100 dollars less for what i bought it. (3 years after it's release) So basically i am only paying 400 on the new iphone, big deal.

the fact your on wifi means you can get the 15$ data also how much do you text?

True but like the ipad and last year there is a big chance all they will need to do is write one line of small code which would take a day or 2 tops.

Quite true as well. I'm just warning the OP that there's a chance that they won't be able to unlock for quite some time.

Damn I feel bad for this guy. He thinks he's actually going to get 3G on his iPhone with T-Mobile.
