After hearing what Apple is releasing with M2 CPU, as an owner of MacBook Air m1, I decided that I want something more mobile, yet capable of running Monterey. I am now a proud owner of 2017 MacBook 12 inch Intel dual core m3, 8/256, space grey, battery cycle 54, looking pristine. I already installed Monterey 12.4 and I find display, battery life and general zippiness to be great. I am not going to do heavy video work on the machine (I've got Mac mini, MBA M1 and huge desktop for that), but more general office work, for which the machine is ideal. Light to carry, it helps me to ease burden on my tired shoulders, lol. It is so light that MBA m1 looks chunky and feels heavy compared to it. Price was about 660 dollars, which I find OK. It had originally Big Sur installed, which was not smooth; but wiped the hard drive clean, with Monterey12.4 it is very smooth and I also reset PRAM. So I will not update to M2, because I already updated to M3 :) I know that Apple may release 12 inch MacBook in 2023 or later, but until then it will be my main travel machine. I didn't install FCPX on it because it won't be a video machine but speakers and display are great. I also had 2013 MBA 11 inch and probably liked the small form factor, because I will so familiar with it already :)

Nice! I patched one of those up from parts on eBay. They are great little machines. Small, fanless, and pretty quick for all the basics. It was not the right fit for me but it definitely saw the appeal.

If you do run into issues with the keyboard the program to swap them out is still going. Just take it into an Apple Store or ship it back and they'll replace it free of charge. It's a bit of a hassle but I'm typing this on a 2017 MBP that has gone back once for this already. You can do it yourself but it isn't for the feint of heart and it is time consuming. I did it because I enjoy doing it but be warned on that front.

Enjoy the machine!

The program is still going? I have a 2016 and was told the program was only lasting another year, and that was like two years ago. I just wondered if I got the wrong information. I couldn't take it in then because I'm in Toronto and we were under lockdowns, for lack of a better word. Guess I can always call Apple and ask, but just wondered when you took yours in to get fixed.

I guess haven't checked super recently but it was for a 2017 MacBook Pro back in March.

Thanks! The keyboard is fine, surprisingly, no issues so far and I find it not much different from mba m1

Welcome to the club! I've had my MacBook m3 with 256 GB SSD / 16 GB RAM since 2017.

We 2017 MacBook owners will be getting macOS 13 Ventura too.

P.S. As far as I can tell, the hardware feature cutoff for macOS Ventura is support for hardware 4K 10-bit HDR h.265 HEVC video decoding.

This goes a long way to make this 2017 Kaby Lake MacBook feel modern in 2022, since it handles HEVC very well, unlike the 2015 & 2016 models.

Mine was purchased in 2018 and I just bought it from the original owner second-hand. The keys were sticky and I broke the space bar trying to clean it. Sent it off to apple, apparently the replacement topcase is on backorder with no ETA...just a fair warning if you try to get the keyboard replaced!
