That my tuna wrap tasted a little bit™ like salmon.

Every eat something and say "You know, I'm probably gonna get sick off of this" and eat it anyway?

Cheese.

Yep, lactose intolerant... yet, I love cheese. It can get pretty ugly when I forget the lactaid.. :(

Pesto

I'm allergic to pinenuts, but love pesto. Many places make pesto with pecans, walnuts, or sunflower seeds, or simply no nuts at all. I'm usually to scared to try, since I've been told wrong by a waiter before.

Pork chops. I can eat ham or bacon or sausage or roast pork or almost anything (except scrapple...it's not natural...). But, for some reason, when I eat pork chops, I get sick.

I was googling. There are 50 million lactose intolerant people in the USA, 1/6th or 16% of the population.

As many as 75 percent of all African Americans and American Indians and 90 percent of Asian Americans are lactose intolerant. The condition is least common among persons of northern European descent.

I had no idea...

So what exactly happens if you do eat or drink dairy products? Can lactose intolerant babies breastfeed?

Varies from person to person (like any allergy, I suppose). Some get gassy, some get the runs, some decide to sue McDonalds ;). I think there may be a good number who are intolerant, but the symptoms are so minimal, that they don'e know it. For example, I sometimes get sick if I drink a lot of milk (over half a gallon in a sitting), but I think it may be the quantity rather than and intolerance.

Circus peanuts. Blech.

Does anyone actually like them?

I love them. I could eat 3 bags...now I'm hungry for them. :( Must.have.circus.peanuts.

They have the look, taste, and texture of industrial packing foam. :p

No, seriously, I think I hate them because I had them when I was ill. I used to love boysenberry syrup, but I had that when I was ill, too.

I love pesto but it gives me a big stomach ache after I eat it.

Also, sometimes I get sick after I eat certain sausages.

I hate cheese, I feel sick after eating that too.

I am not lactose intolerant though, I only drink milk and water :)

Pesto's best when made with pine nuts. Oh so yummy...

Ack! Common misconception alert!

Lactose intolerance is not the same as a dairy allergy!

What skoker and others, including my son, are allergic to are the proteins in the milk. Those of us who are intolerant (as I have become since we cut daiiry out of our diet for our son) just can no longer digest the sugar in the milk (lactose), and so it "gums up the works" to put it mildly.

I think you're right about the number of people who are lactose intolerant that either don't know about it, or just ignore it since their symptoms are milder than others.

Symptoms of lactose intolerance can vary in severity. In my case, I can tolerate a small amount of milk/dairy products on a daily basis, but if I exceed that amount, whooo, don't I know it! Gassiness, bloating, frequent visits to the bathroom...

Imodium. YESSSSS! The lactose intolerant person's friend....

And, yes, for many years I didn't really understand why it was that drinking a chocolate milkshake would give me problems but a simple cup of yogurt would be OK. When I was in a situation where suddenly I was eating much more dairy than I was accustomed to doing, the problem surfaced big-time and finally, with the help of a registered dietitian the cause was identified. I then experimented to find the amount of dairy that is comfortable and safe for me and as long as I'm mindful of that, I'm fine.

I've still been googling. This whole lactose intolerance thing is interesting. Apparently lactose intolerance is evolutionarily a good thing, a mechanism which acts to 'force-wean' infant mammals. It's a genetic mutation that allowed Europeans to consume milk into adulthood.

Approximately 70% of the global population cannot tolerate lactose in adulthood. Thus, some argue that the terminology should be reversed, lactose intolerance should be seen as the norm, and the minority Western European group should be labelled as having lactase persistence.

Congrats! We're the odd ones!

I'm in the same situation. It took me over a year and a half to figure out why I was having problems when I ate dairy. I've just figured it out less than a month ago. Now I am also playing with the amount of dairy I can have each day, which unfortunately isn't much.

Yogurt's the only dairy I can tolerate daily now. The nice acidophilus also help me digest any occasional other dairy intake.

I think circus peanuts are just packaging peanuts with a orange color.
