I dropped an external USB HD onto my MBP today

I would put a case on if you drop things a lot.
It saved my MBP couple times from dents and scratches.

it was open, so case would not help
it went like this, a mosquito flied past my external monitor so I went for the kill and accidentaly hit the cable for that drive (wd passport, all plastic, thank goodnes) and it fell from the shelf onto the macbook's display...
drive survived too, guess it had its heads parked.
