I would put a case on if you drop things a lot.
It saved my MBP couple times from dents and scratches.

it was open, so case would not help 😀
it went like this, a mosquito flied past my external monitor so I went for the kill and accidentaly hit the cable for that drive (wd passport, all plastic, thank goodnes 😀) and it fell from the shelf onto the macbook's display...
drive survived too, guess it had its heads parked.
