I dropped my iPhone in a bowl of cooking oil for a second. Now everything still works except the speakers. They have a very damp, low sound. When people call me I can't hear them.

I once dropped my computer speakers in water and they didn't work for some time until the water dried but apparently oil doesnt evaporate at roomtemperature.

What should i do?

How did it taste? Sorry, couldn't help myself.:D

Who are you to determine this? He has every right to clean it up the best he can and go to Apple for replacement. its Apple's job to determine what is and what is not covered under their warranty. Not yours.

If he goes in there with the right attitude, he will walk out with a free new iPhone. Apple is there for customer service, not customer strangulation.

Your opinion of "don't go to Apple, its your fault!" is the least helpful comment anyone could conceivably offer.

Oh I'm Jessica. Nice to meet you. Are you seriously condoning fraud by way of attacking me about a comment I made almost a month ago?

It's not the worst man...cheer up

First, it all depends...was it corn oil or olive oil?? coz that's a big difference!
ok enough with the silly jokes..

The problem with oil is that it doesn't dry up for maybe weeks or even months - especially that it's stuck inside the phone right now and not exposed directly to air.

Did you consider opening the phone and cleaning it? there is many slow motion videos on youtube that show you how to disassemble the phone.

I know for sure that if you could reach inside the speakers area and clean it off it will help so much.....finally, i would be grateful the phone didn't get messed up altogether, at least you can just keep a headphone and use it when u need to..

I'm going to go with getting Apple to replace it.

You dropped it in oil. That's your fault. BUT, the fact that the display is getting white lines may mean the phone had another issue to begin with. Dropping it in "cooking oil" (vegetable oil, I hope/assume) shouldn't fry anything. Yes, it may damage the speakers and the microphone, but it shouldn't damage the electric components. IIRC, there are people who use freaking vegetable oil to cool their computers.

So, yes, let Apple decide.

Are you for real? Seriously, you are advocating that those who damage their products to clean them up and try and get Apple (or whatever company) to replace it?

As an AAPL stockholder, I find your suggestion abhorrent.

As a human being, I find your morals quite lacking.

No offense but I don't think that a person with an avatar of panties around ankles should be giving moral advice on an internet forum.

Also, owning 1 share of Apple stock does not give you the right to insult others for doing what they can to get by.

In reference to the text I put in Bold: The difference in cooling a computer with oil versus dunking the phone in oil is that the cpu/electronic components never comes into direct contact with the oil!

I do sympathize with the OP, it sucks when stuff like this happens; but own up to what happened.

I actually just registered to reply to this thread.. I did the same thing with my old 1st gen.. My speaker and mic didn't work right afterwards either.. Blow the microphone and speaker out with a can of compressed air and you will have a HUGE improvement.

I started getting white lines in the screen and it only got worse. There's nothing you can do to fix that unless you get the screen replaced.

If your phone is still under warranty, blow out every single crack & crevice with compressed air until you don't see any oil leaking out anywhere. Check that your water damage indicators are still white and haven't turned red. The 1st gen only have them in the headphone jack, I believe the 3g's have them both in the headphone jack and in the dock connector slot. Give it a good cleaning to remove the oil on the exterior and bring it to Apple, play stupid and they will replace it. They were about to replace mine but my phone was out of warranty. It's not the most ethical thing, but it'll save you money.

I have to agree. I have no problem waiting in line a the genius bar behind someone who is trying to figure out what happened to their computer after an update, but I can not stand standing in line behind someone who knows damn well their in the wrong, but want to try for a free replacement anyway. There are enough legit reasons to go the the genius bar.

Okay. That leads me to believe then, that the white lines are caused by dropping it in the oil.

In that case, OP, it's not Apple's responsibility to replace it.

Dude is the phone oily? If not take it to apple and get a new one. Take out the some card and wipe down the tray and card. These people who yell poor ethics and what not did this stuff with their nokias with the removable interchangable front plates ( you all know the phone) back to the store when they had water damage with a non effected water damage indicator sticker.

Give it a thorough cleaning.cover up all evidence. And get a new phone.

What the hell has a person's avatar to do with their fitness to hold an opinion? Obviously Apple are under no obligation to indemnify owners of their phones against their own carelessness, and to suggest someone should conceal the evidence and make an unjustified claim is condoning fraud, plain and simple. Accidental damage is what insurance is for.

Oil spilled on my iPod touch & now the screen is white has dark spots and white spots all over the screen I know it still works because when I click the button some times it would randomly say no music something about video call what can I do?? I've tried clicked the home button and power button it doesn't work??
