System has been completely idle for maybe 4 hours. What temperatures are considered normal?

Check the activity monitor for processes that are eating CPU. Using 100% of CPU. Also try canned air n the compuelter. That really hot.

Those are roughly the idle temps I get in my 17" Core Duo iMac. Especially at 83 degrees ambient, those internal temps are about as good as you can get without ramping up the fans.

If those are Fahrenheit they're relatively normal temps.

Why do all these programs let you choose between F and C? Always set it to C. Core shutdown starts at 100C, those are normal temps.
