Its not the rights to the song I'm worried about, its the school. You are all are right though, I should change the music so as not to be in violation of copyright laws. Nothing on the video is slander though, so as far as I can tell, the Administration can be mad but not really be able to say I broke some school law.

I just found this on the Cobb County website. If I read this correctly, there is no possible way for me to get in trouble.

H. PUBLIC PERFORMANCES:
1. Students participating in public performances may be recorded by a variety of entities
including but not limited to news agencies, vendors with whom the school or a
school support organization has contracted, and members of the public in attendance
at the event.
2. The recording of public extra-curricular events by members of the public is generally
acceptable. In those cases when the District is utilizing copyrighted performance
pieces:
a. The staff member (Director) in charge of the event is responsible for obtaining
permission from the copyright holder and ensuring that the District’s use meets all
conditions of the copyright holder’s permission to use the material.
b. If the copyright holder’s permission prohibits audio or visual recordings of the
performance, the Director is to announce and post the statement that no
photography, audio recording, or visual recording is allowed. This announcement
may be printed in the performance’s program in lieu of posting.
c. If the Director has contracted with an outside vendor to record an event, either by
visual or audio means, it is the Director’s responsibility to confirm that all
necessary copyright permissions for this recording have been secured.
d. If the Director has given permission to a school support organization to record an
event, either video or audio, it is the Director’s responsibility to confirm that
he/she has secured all necessary copyright permissions for this recording.

I'm so sick of bullying school administrations. The one I work for, especially, but also any other administration that holds its image in higher esteem than its pedagogy.

A few years ago, a local high school principal was smoking on school grounds, and a student snapped a photo with his camera phone. The kid posted the photo to the web, but was threatened by the administration (I don't know the extent of the threats) and ultimately took it down.

I don't understand why so many administrators distrust their students and their teachers to such a degree. Administrations are scared to death of 17 year olds (school ends at 2:50 where I teach, and kids aren't allowed back in the school after 3:15) and condescending and prescriptive toward their teachers.

Not that I'm burning out ...

The worst part is that it's a cyclical phenomenon. If you don't hold a certain level of trust in people they resent it and eventually start to give you real reasons to distrust them.

No they did not bring back Bruce, but from what I hear, he is getting a new higher paying job with something he enjoys greatly.

Just a warning here... to be sure that you know the entire story.

There may be reasons why this guy was fired that you know nothing about. If that's the case, then you're more likely to end up with trouble than if the guy was forced to resign having done nothing wrong.

My thoughts exactly. You may never know the entire story.

I'm sure he appreciated you all standing up for him. I know I would be proud.

very nice video. school administration will not prosecute you. Why? Because they do not want to waste money on filing a lawsuit on such a petty thing, like recording a school walk out.

Well, good luck.

It wasn't really a performance, but hopefully nothing comes of this. :)

I'm all for dissent, but I have to wonder how many kids were like "Sweet, I'm going to get a free pass on skipping for this one." Hopefully, my cynicism is not true.

Use ur .mac account

Just use iWeb and post the video on the site.

email everyone in ur school even ur teachers, and tell them to watch the video online.

Or better yet, shrink the video using iMovie down to a 30sec clip and email them.

Make a podcast if u can with images video audio, that might be better. And publish it on iTunes!!!

You did a good thing for the guy, and there's no legal standing so go right ahead. i'm not sure if defamation laws apply though if u add the name of ur highschool on the pics or podcast.

By way of some friendly, non-legal advice feedback, the statement by the school admin person is nonsense. It did make me laugh a bit, so it had some value. A private citizen/corporation/school district/etc. cannot "prosecute" anything. To get a DA, City att'y, Cty att'y - whatever variety you have there to file a charge against you: 1) there would have to be evidence that you violated a statute or reg. implimenting a statute (i.e., the law) 2) he'd/she'd have to decide that it was worth the time and money. Even if somehow, there was some law you had violated (and - again, has made me laugh a bit just to think about it), the chances of (2) would still be nil.

On the civil suit side, I can't see anything to worry about either - from the school dist or folks appearing in the video; the latter for the same reasons a news crew that might have filmed the same sort of event or a riot or a march, etc. is not going to get releases from the folks in the footage.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot I feel much safer now.

Be afraid, be very afraid

I am a teacher and I can tell you in Florida, you can wear the wrong color shoes and they can fire you.You need to ask yourself this simple
question:
"is it in my interest to upload this video and suffer any consequence?"

School districts are the worst employers to work for whether U be
a janitor, teacher or bus driver. we had a male music teacher accused
in Pinellas county of molesting a 8 year old girl. He was suspended without pay, arrested...went to court and was found NOT GUILTY after
34 minutes by the jury. The school district still REFUSES
