ARK is required by most Rogue Amoeba Utilities to intercept application and system audio. The API it is using was developed with Apple. It is complex but reliable by now.
If you have problems, contact their support. Support is working with the engineers and very competent and responsive.

Soundsource 5.7.5. M1 mini. Sequoia 15.2

I'm having a problem where periodically any audio playing apps and soundsource itself hang. No audio playing to any device and if I click on the soundsource icon in the system menu, I get beach ball. Force quit and restart those apps and soundsource does not help. The only thing to get audio working again is to restart macos. This seems to happen after wake from sleep, but not every time.

Anyone else?
FWIW, I use SoundSource and record in Logic Pro often along with a bunch of other "Audio" related apps, and have had no issues.

I'm suddenly suffering the same symptoms on my m2 Pro Mini, but I'm still on Sonoma.

Huh. I figured it had to do with the new extension. But you're on Sonoma so that's not the case
SoundSource has been flaky for me since the last Sonoma security update. The settings for different apps are the same but the sound is loud or faint and I have to re-adjust things. Then after a reboot the settings are all screwed up again.

An update on continued SoundSource issues: v5.8.2 seems to have caused my MacBook Pro M3 Pro to run down its battery. Very unhappy about this, but working with RougeAmeoba on this. It's the second time this year that SoundSource has prevented sleeping and run the battery to 0.

Last year I had more problems of with audio not working or being flaky. Each time they've worked with me to fix with a development build. I've been a SoundSource user pretty much since it was introduced years ago, but I'm close to giving up on it.

Update Edit: I also found that SS is interfering with Dictation--activating dictation resulted in an error tone. Updating either SS or the ARK (plus open/quit) allows Dictation to work, but there's no activation sound when SS is open. So chalk up yet another problem to SoundSource....

Same. I cant believe they havent reverted to 5.7 and the old audio driver.

They've completely trashed their reputation. Theres numerous threads on reddit too.

Very hard to tell if their responses are gaslighting or a complete lack of understanding of the problems with the app. It feels like a combination.

They were really supportive of me as we worked through issues. The latest version looks ok - v5.8.2. 15.4.1 made a big difference! Apple probably fixed bugs on their part. I have been writing with their engineers. They sounded frustrated dealing with Apple's opaque stance.

I am configuring SDR-Control for Icom rig control software for my ICOM IC-7300 SoundSource is working great, configuring its audio settings.
That's great for you, I'm happy for you. But like others here I find SS is the source of many problems. On my Macs, especially an Apple Silicon on, it's caused all kinds of problems. The worst is two different times in 2025 preventing the MBP from going to sleep (verified in pmset logs): the battery was completely run down twice. SS interferes with Dictation on M3 Pro and has caused other audio issues on both architectures. All this starting late in 2024. I appreciate some of this could be related to Apple updates, but one Mac was not running Sequoia, so it can't all be blamed on this. [sorry for the post repetition]

RA has been great to work with in solving some problems, but I don't need software that actually damages my Mac after some random update. I can't imagine using this in a production environment.

The big difference here is that I am running it on a Mac Studio. I have never been a fan of laptop computers. It is a keyboard issue I have with them. I spent decades as a high-speed 60++ wpm typist. I never used a laptop that had a keyboard I liked. So in my case, I don't have to worry about batteries. I also don't use it for production. It is used to control audio routing. This is the Audio settings available for SDR-Control for ICOM I use for computer control of my ICOM IC-7300.
