This happened before, and the answer everyone said was "get new friends." Then the person started getting really defensive, saying that you shouldn't judge his friends, blah blah blah, I have no self-esteem, whine whine whine.

What were we talking about?

I think he edited his post too. I seem to remember a different story for why he couldn't unlock his iPod before.

Lets turn this around slightly - I'm contracting in the ME based in Kuwait - there is absolutely nothing for westerners to do out here - not to mention a major cultural difference.
Weekends are just 'work' breaks and once in a while I get around to some local souks (markets) where you get all sorts of stuff for sale - everything from topaz stones from Iran being sold by surly desert arabs through to awesome dune buggies.
So yup - someone was selling all sorts of electronic equipment - broken and usable - from earplugs to cell phones and battered hard disks - and - a locked iPod touch.
I bought it - haggling in sign language and broken english - and sure there is a strong possiblity it was stolen somewhere along the way.

From an ethical perspective - it is probably wrong - and the social assumption is that this will simply help keep the criminal cycle going i.e. with no buyers you won't have sellers ...?

Yeah right !

I could argue that this is not quite the same as buying 'stuff' from a dodgy neighbourhood down the road, where you're probably just supporting your local crack house - but extenuating circumstances are never a valid excuse when arguing ethics etc.

I am basically existing in a pretty harsh environment - with limited means for some down time - so gladly purchased said component at a price that will make searching for a solution hopefully worth the risk.

FYI - I am fortunate that my SAfrican upbringing was english based - so I could make some attempt at applying my parents investment in school fee's - else I could have attempted posting this in broken english and old Dutch or even Zulu.

Try to apply some common sense and basic etiquette from your safe first world havens where everything is at your fingertips and you all dress and sound the same ... :p

So - yeah - hopefully I find a solution b4 I am outta comms again and have sand sand and more sand .. amongst other nasties ...

So, after reading this thread from beginning to end, I can sympathize with the fact that most everyone here thinks that the original thread starter is a thief. Posting on a forum board is usually the last resort, when everything else has been stymied.

However, one should be objective to a thread starter's problems first, at least in my view, before other evidence presents itself that the object may or may be not his/hers.

For example, the thread starter may have a different comp that he/she is on...thus no original iTunes library, thus said message. I get that message all the time between my Mini, MB Pro, and other mac comps (although I just charge my iPhone/iPod on any comp that is convenient).

That said, having been a long-time reader and small-time poster, I can see the difficulty gauging whether or not someone is true on a message board.

It's entirely possible that said person could contact Apple/Police for help - asking Apple to notify said person when their iPod is connected up to iTunes and where that location is.

How would you go about doing this? I had my ipod touch stolen recently and I've told the police the serial number but it would be helpful if apple could let me know if it get's connected to the internet or synced.
I used the mail setting to sync my contacts, mail and calendar to my account at university, I've now changed the email but will the information stay on the ipod or will it delete everything when it realises the password is wrong?

Thanks for any help, this has just annoyed me to no end!

They can't. MagicWok has no idea what he's talking about.

What a noob!
The key command to restore if you forget your password is in the instructions.:mad:hahahahahahaha:mad:

Bump

OK, I think many here know me. The fact is I took my 12yr old daughters iPod touch away for about 3 months for bad behavior.
I have given it back to her tonight since her report card came it pretty good!
After 3 months she has forgotten password.
We have plugged it in and we get the same msg about "iTunes could not connect to the iPod "JoJo's touch" because it is locked with a passcode. you must ennter your passcode on the iPod before it can be used with iTunes."

this is NOT a stolen touch, it is plugged into the computer it is registered to, and Apple care is closed.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!

UPDATE:

Googled and performed DFU and got the iPod back on the computer, did the restore and then restored from the last backup.
DFU works great if it is the computer that it was registered on, the backup did the trick.

Connect the device to the computer.
Hold down the awake/sleep (top of the device) along with the home button. The device should shut off it's display and then restart with only the apple logo, release the awake/sleep button while still holding home, a sync icon will appear and you will find the option to restore, do so.
I registered just to spite the idiots in this thread, who made some of the most ridiculously computer illiterate styled comments, I have ever seen.
Someone could easily have hard drive failure or any other problem, which wouldn't allow them the ability to use the original sync computer, the ipod locks you out if you don't have the password or someone foolishly mashes the incorrect password several times.
What are you people, 13?

Another thing to throw into the mix:

If you set a passcode after a sync, and then try to sync again with the original computer while it is locked, it may give this message. Mine did that to me after I set a passcode in order to make it so a thief would have a hard time being able to use it. I don't know if any of the DFU mode stuff works firsthand, but that seems to be the best way, as it circumvents the OS lock altogether.

Hey I have a Similar problem

:(I have a Similar problem but a friend didn't give it to me or anyone else. I found it in my High school parking lot and don't even know what generation it is. its a 16g, and that is all I know. I want to see who's it is because I want to give it back to them. I already have an Ipod that is an 8g and well I know for a fact that if I lost mine I would kick the living ***** out of the person that stole it. They cost money this is the second one that I went through and I would like to be more careful with my new one. Well enough on that. Anyway they have a passcode on it and I tried several times to crack the code but I don't want anything on it to get erased. Well I guess that really doesn't matter but still I would like to give it back to he/she the way they had it. But anyway I tried almost everything here and I just found it today in a puddle of water after a good rain. What should I do??? I mean if I give it to the office someone could claim it but what if it wasn't he/she in the first place. So how do you find out who's Ipod is it???:(

Report it as found but dont turn it in to anyone...whoever tries to claim it...make them enter in the passcode to prove it is theirs. I wouldnt trust the people at the office either.

Notice the silence after several affirmations that this would only happen if the ipod was stolen.

Maybe he just found a way to restore the iPod and he doesn't care about you now that the iPod is working.

* I still think this iPod was stolen *

Think What you want its not. I would never do that. I do admit that I wanted to but I'm coming around and want to see who's it is and want to give it back to him or her.

thank you guys

I gave it back. the person was actually my best friend. I just hope that he didn't get lucky and figure it out but he got it. so its back into the owners hands. and he was really grateful that i gave it back to him.:) thanks for you help.
