I had the same thing happen to a desktop PC. However my experianced was a dead machine.
When I took it apart to check the power supply I found pennys in the case.
Long Story Short, - My two year old was using my PC as a Piggy Bank!

Do you have kids?

No kiddies for me, nor have I really been around any since I've owned the laptop. In any case, it really appears to be intentional.
I did NOT (willingly) purchase a refurb. I may have to get my angry face on.

Love the answer given in the other thread from 2 years ago:

It's Apple's way of giving you a discount!

Thinking.. thinking.. bingo, the coin looks like it could have been pushed in through the cd slot, and with general use has slipped out the bottom. could have shorted something if it weren't for the plastic cover.

And then automagically taped itself to the computer?

For reals?

It's a 2011 macbook pro, which I bought at an apple store in Montreal in the fall of '11. It's blowing my mind a bit. At least it's something weird to focus on aside from the likelihood of my computer being dead.

You got it from the shiny red fruit store? This is a little concerning, was it a refurb? So their idea of "quality control" ends up like this? Really?

Since you've owned it? You make it sound like you bought it from someone else. We can certainly say that the quarter has not come from Foxconn or Apple.

Nope, I bought it from an Apple store in Montreal - brand new.

It's like a year later but I just found a quarter in my Mac. I opened it to replace my bad hard drive and I found a U.S. quarter. No one can explain it to me.

Weird.... Never found one in my 09. I don't dare check my retina.

A retina Macbook wouldn't have one because it lacks an optical drive. I've come across a few of these. Mostly from the 2010-2011 model years. I've deduced that they were added when the drive was made, but that theory has some holes in it. Still the most tight of the ones I've come up with.

All I can think of is that the old Powerbook 15" had the airport bluetooth piece strapped to the very same spot on the optical drive, and it is a good place for it in terms of protecting the optical drive because too much hand pressure on the top of the drive bends it and can kill it.

Though I don't know how there would be any real pressing down on the keyboard or topcase in the all aluminum unibody mbp's.

That could be just a way to protect the optical drive? And the quarters just happen to be the right fit?

It's part of a promotion between Apple and the NFL. You got a quarter back! :D

Hi,
Today when I was taking the bottom plate off of my Macbook (for the first time ever) I noticed a canadian quarter sealed in plastic above the optical drive. I've never taken the bottom plate off before, it's sealed in completely, and I can't see a possible way for it to have gotten in there post manufacture. Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

Tooth fairy hiding place y'all

If you look closely the quarter is sitting in a circle. It's almost like it was meant to sit right there as it's sitting in a cut out circle area. It's some kind of magnetic purpose or to reduce vibration.

This is blowing my mind. Has the reason ever emerged since the phenomenon emerged?

At least the Canadian quarter is worth something......might find an English pence in mine...useless....
