I think think the problem here is that why would someone turn on a computer with an external keyboard while the lid is closed. I think the MBP assumes that if you are doing this, you have an external display attached.
Now if you accidentally did this, try putting the MBP to sleep again. Perhaps by unplugging the adapter. If that doesn't work they try opening and closing the lid. Finally you can also try the apple remote by just holding down the play button for a few seconds.
Once it's asleep, plug the adapter back in and wake it the proper way by opening the lid.
By the way another solution if your display is blank but the MBP is on is to click on 'Detect Displays'. Of course this might be hard since the screen is blank. I'm not sure if there is some shortcut with keys that you can use. I use detect display when I have an external monitor with the MBP running in the closed lid mode and open the lid because I need the extended desktop. When I open the lid the MBP display is off but then I click Detect Displays and it turns on. Note that in my scenario, the external is running the whole time which makes it easy to click on Detect Displays 🙂
I had this exact same problem on my MBP 2.2 Ghz 160 GB.
I was running the iStat Pro Dashboard widget and disabled it. As soon as I did, all my sleep issues disappeared and my MBP awakens normally every single time.
If you are using iStat Pro, try disabling it and see if it solves your sleep issues too.
ya same here
im guessing you have never done a reinstall.
i have done 10 since january (when i got the computer)
this thing is great but it came with a bunch of gremlins.
i know all of the genius bar by name and they know me now.
so frustrating, go to the genius bar and try and make the screen black and ten bucks says you cannot

Hey I have another way to wake the computer without having to reboot every time. For some reason the MBP thinks there is an external monitor plugged in which is why the hard disk and everything else are working but not the actual screen. If you have an external monitor just plug it in and both screens will then turn on. You can then unplug the external monitor and your MBP screen will still be on with no more issues (until the next time you close the lid).
It certainly does seem to be related to the MBP having trouble determining which screen to use - unfortunately I don't have an external screen with me all the time. Actually rarely. So I can't trick it into co-operating like that. Disabling iSat has no effect for me either. With all the other bugs that have shown up since 10.5.2, I am also getting very VERY close to going back to Tiger. If .3 doesn't fix them, I will for sure. If .3 takes too long to come out - I might anyway. Seems pretty simple - we've got the problem pretty well hashed out on various threads... CMON APPLE! FIX IT!!!
As a side note - I can very consistently trigger the black-screen wake by putting it to sleep (close the lid), and then initiating ANY usb activity. Plug in, unplug, even move or click a USB mouse. I have the Logitech nano, so I prefer to just leave the adapter plugged in - but then when I pick up the mouse to turn it off, if I've already closed the MBP - the mouse triggers a wake process, then it goes back to sleep, but the next time I open the lid, black screen. Ugh.
