the phone is pretty much dead, and i dont have a power cord for it..... i tried the siri thing but it didn't work...

What does 'pretty much dead' mean?

Power cords are available at any Apple store, Best Buy, etc.

sooo maybe i can overwrite the passcode area and call someone in the address book
Uh huh. Rrrriiiight. You just want to get into the phone to call someone in the contact list. Take the phone to an Apple, ATT or Verizon store.

All you people who say you wouldn't think about keeping it... we know you're lying. How can you honestly say it wouldn't even cross your mind?... ;)

Not everyone are like you. Do you even think about if the person who lost the phone is you or someone you know?

I would just try to charge up the phone and tune it on. When find iPhone calls you, just tell them you found the phone and arrange for the return. The owner may even give you something for your trouble and your kindness. The least would be you will feel better about yourself.

I remember years ago, I found an old style, original iPod shuffle in a car park behind a main street where I live. I was on my way to work, so I put it in my pocket and went about my day. I came home with that Shuffle and ended up giving it to my wife.

Three weeks later, almost to the day, I lost a brand new iPod nano.

I could have sworn it was in the pocket I went to look in. I got off the train that day, put the iPod in my pocket (wrapped in it's headphones), and took my jacket off when I went into my in-laws house. I went to leave half an hour later, and it was gone. We tore the living room apart, looked down the side of sofas, under sofas, everywhere we thought possible. The jacket never left my sight.

From that day I truly believe you reap what you sow. And while an iPod Shuffle might not hold the financial value of an iPhone 4S, the moral is the same.

Return it.

OP just talk straight; you want to bypass the passcode to keep it and thus I will not help you... I find it funny that the phone has a 'dead battery' and you don't have a cable to charge it, BUT you want a passcode cracker of sorts even though there is no power on the device

this is stupid. If he was gonna keep it he would just have to restore it (which requires a cable). If he restores it, he loses the numbers making it impossible to contact the owner. If you jailbreak it then it's possible to bypass the pass code screen. Also possible to do a backup and extract the address book from it so you can call.

keep it

put in to DFU mode, phone basically starts from beginning.

Even if serial number is wiped out, you basically get a free iPod with an 8MP camera
If I find a phone and I know I can return it to the original owner easily, I would. But if the phone is locked don't even bother. Just do what the guy above says, restore it through iTunes and keep it.

If I lose a phone I would just forget about it, I know most people would not bother return it. And don't even take it to the police station, they won't do **** just like if you take it back an AT&T store.

OK

so i bought a cord for the iphone 4s

charged it up

i really dont feel comfortable leaving it on, especially if they have wheres my iphone.. ect ect

side-note

still can't even get into the damn thing to even restore it if i wanted to without the passcode

Why are you even doing this? Just take it back and worry about something important in your life.

It's sad that I know you believe this.

It's quite simple really. It's not my property and I have no right to keep it.

Returning it to the owner is the right thing to do - which would mean taking it to AT&T and turning it in.

No question whatsoever.

i found an iPhone 4s for at&t

the battery was pretty much dead when i found it... i needed a passcode for it... its for at&t

what should i do with it?

Do the right thing and turn it in the AT&T.. you'll be happy you did. Plus you probably wouldn't be able to use it if the person reported it as lost/stolen I think AT&T would have blocked the IMEI...

Which is exactly why you should turn it in. If they have "Find My iPhone" and most likely they do, it comes default on the 4s... they might report you to the police via your location. Just do the right thing, this decision shouldn't be hard for you.

The carrier will still block the IMEI though. Spare the poor soul and hand it back into AT&T, even debating it on a forum sheesh, I wouldn't hesitate to take it back as someone will be going spare out there.

It is clear there is no reasoning with the OP at this point.

I have no idea why the OP would even think of keeping it, with the carrier able to block a stolen phone it makes little sense. Try and return it maybe theirs a reward, otherwise you just found and iPod. >_>
But lets be honest, I get the feeling the OP "found" the phone, and was hoping someone shady here would be willing to assist him. Not to mention why in the world would you buy a charging cord, just to return it? Thinking you will get reimbursed? lol
