I get around 40 to 50 Kernal Panics everyday!

I can't imagine sitting through re-boot more than two or three times in one day! 🙄

We need to find this person a fix! 😀

You have serious issues with your hardware. Only Apple can help you at this point.
 
Wait, I'm sorry if this is too too obvious, but you said you tried two clean installs of Tiger. Did you try re-installing Panther?
 
what woud be considered a kernal panic? is that when a programe stoppes responding? or when it crashes? or something else?
 
We can guess all day long, but try this...

Select text, copy (command-c)

I don't know if anyone here would be able to learn anything from them, but you could try looking at the logs. Open the HD click library then logs then panics.log In there is a bunch info relating to all your panics.
I don't know if this helps, but someone suggested it to me in a thread I started here. (If anyone has any ideas for my situation that would be awesome.)

There are NO panic logs!?

Okay, I have tried looking in HD > Library > Logs

But there are only 3 folders in there. Console, Crash Repoter, DirectoryService.

I have tried using Spotlight to search for "Panic", but no results are found.

And on another note, yes these are Kernel panics I am getting. The screen dims, I get a grey box with a power button, and a message telling me to restart my computer.
 
Okay, I have an oppointment at 2:30pm at the Apple Store Genius bar. I will let you all know how it pans out...

On another note, it seems if I set the processor performance to 'reduced' in the system preferences, I don't get any panics! I am beginning to suspect it has something to do with heat, as the more I use the laptop, the hotter it gets, and the more panics it causes!

Any suggestions?
 
the logic board probably needs reseating with some new thermal paste, if it's just overheating, are the fans kicking in? if not then they would need replaceing.

dont let apple repair your stuff they overcharge it's not hard to replace stuff yourself on a tibook.

I think it is definitely the heat that is causing the problem, as I have been using the PowerBook with 'reduced' processor enabled for 3 hours now, and I haven't received one single panic! (touch wood).

To be honest, I haven't noticed if the fan has been coming on or not.
 
Okay, I have just got back from visiting the Genius bar at the Apple Store. They also agreed that the problem must be hardware based, as I have run all the relavent tests for the software.

The performed their own hardware test, in which the logic board came up fine, so the problem lies with the over heating... So the fan needs replacing!

I would like to thank everyone on this board for their contributions. I love the Mac community!
 
do not let them repair it without telling us how much they want to charge first, if it's extortionate i'll buy and replace the parts for you for half the price they quote you (I'm an apple certified technician 😛).

It wasn't much at all. It was £42, (including parts and installation).

Btw, I asked them how much it would cost to replace the logic board... £512!

not bad, i could do it for £25 but it would be too much hassle.

if ever your logic board dose fail thats extortion, i'd do it for £250
