I got my wife an iPad for Mothers Day and I noticed last week that there is a dead pixel right in the middle. It bugs the hell out of me but I didn't want to tell her because she hasn't noticed yet. If I got it in May is it to late to trade it out for a new one with a 100% working screen?

Yes, it's too late. There is an allowance about dead pixels and one dead pixel is still within the limit. I suppose, you just have to keep your little secret to yourself now, don't tell her that!

you can make a genius bar appointment for it and they'll most likely replace it, but in general from what i know lcd's can ship with about 3 dead pixels and pass inspection.

keep in mind that you never know what the replacement ipad might have as far as dead pixels.

if each display had to pass with 0 dead pixels it would drive the cost of displays up big time.

OK, sounds like I'll just keep it and hope she doesn't notice it. It's crazy but now that I have my iPhone 4 the display on the iPad looks kind of bad now. Thanks for the quick replies guys!

That was true 10-15 years ago, but is no longer the case. Google screen test, or dead pixel test. Run the test. Sometimes this gets them working again. If not, bring it in for an exchange.

I did the test and it shows up on all colors but black. Now I just need to find a fix app or something.

Exchange it. The three dead pixel rule is so 1990, it's from the early days of LCD manufacturing technology.

I contend that your wife has already seen it and simply hasn't mentioned it to you because she doesn't want you to obsess over it.

In the end, if it's bothersome just take it back and see what they can do.

I was thinking the exact same thing. The wife knows... they always do. It either doesn't bother her or it's just not worth bringing it up.

She probably just thinks it's dust on the screen. She just got her iPhone4 yesterday so now she may never notice it.

You have nothing to lose except for a little bit of time by scheduling an appointment to bring it in.

I returned one for a single dead pixel and got a new replacement.

Exchange it. You don't lose anything in asking them. If they say no then just add more dead pixels by having a screen on the whole time without any moving graphics or anything... that is surely to give out some burnout to your pixels.

In my experience, if it is in the centre of the screen they WILL replace it due to the placement of the pixel. It would be a different story if it were in the corner for example.

Bring it back. That would really bug me.

An LCD TV for my bedroom had a dead pixel right in the middle. I brought it right back. It would have bugged me to no end.

You know what's funny.... I just found a dead pixel on my display after reading this thread. About half an inch from the centre. Great.

Gonna take it apple store when I next go to town :/

I haven't opened my iPad yet as I had to leave on a business trip right after I got it, but the dead pixel test is going to be the first thing I do.

Yeah. I'm currently in talks with a CR rep over my iPhone 4 and an executive relations rep over my MacBook Pro. I'm gonna talk to them and see if I can get a NEW replacement. I don't want a refurb when I've only owned it for just over 2 weeks.
