heya all, just to confirm I also have a flickering screen on 17 " SR MBP.

I upgraded the screen to the Hi Res 1920 1200 version as well. Like everyone here I notice it most on Grey backgrounds.

I bought the MBP for using primarily Logic Pro (have been using an iMac for 12 months prior with no probs).

Sadly, the default Logic Screen is probably about 90 % grey, so I noticed the flicker right away :(

There is an option to change the background colour though which has taken the flicker away in Logic.

Very disapointed as you can imagine. I bought the machine at the apple store online store (UK). Does anyone know if I can take it to the apple store in London to have it looked at/replaced? (Also I upgraded to 7200 HD).

many thanks,

_neil_

Do you think I should call a apple and see what they say?
I don't need to send my MBP to repair?

I just got a call from Apple. Their hardware team is investigating the problem and it expected that it will be resolved with a software update.

I really hope this is true, because the flickering is the ONLY thing about my new MacBook Pro that I'm not thoroughly impressed by.

Me too. It is the best computer I have ever owned, so this being software fixable is extremely positive. I am also very pleased that they inform customers about the situation. I was afraid they would just say "no comment" and let us wait in uncertainty. Their support is fantastic.

Well I hope it can be fixed with a software update... even if not, hey I won the QC lottery, I didn't get a yellow screen :p

The only reason why I noticed it was because of KeyCue.

Possible fix

I just got my brand new SR 15" glossy MBP today... and lo and behold it had the flicker/shimmering problem.

Doing a little searching, I found this:
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070629084320249

Turns out the MacBook Pro 2.2/2.4 Software Update 1.0 may fix the flickering/shimmering issue.

I installed it, and after two reboots, I am very happy to report that my shimmering display is shimmering no more. :D

I'm so glad this is/was fixable in software. As always, YMMV.

Hmmm, you are right.

Mine still flickers, but it is VERY subtle now.

I've noticed some faint flickering as well at about 50% brightness. However, when I boot into the Hardware Test app on the OS X cd, the flickering is VERY noticeable - the whole screen looks like it's pulsing.

I'm curious if anyone else sees flickering on the hardware test page?

PS- to run hardware test, boot with the OS X cd in the drive and hold down the "d" key while booting.

Damn it to hell.

I just noticed a slight flickering today on my brand new MBP.

But it only seems to happen when viewing websites with dark backgrounds and backgrounds that are lined horizontally when the lines are like 1 pixel high each.

This isn't enough to make me want to take it back I guess, but still very strange and disappointing. Hope it can be fixed via a software update.

as already mentioned i believe this can be resolved by doing option alt P + R on startup for 3 beeps. ive not tried it yet as i keep forgetting to do it.

Didn't work for me either. I still have the horizontal lines under most conditions and flickering under some specific conditions. My MBP is set to be sent back to Apple as soon as I pack it up.

It can't. I've tried several times. I am fairly certain that Apple is working on a "flicker update 2.0" that will resolve the issue completely, or at least eliminate it to a degree where only the whiniest of whiners will complain :)

I have solved the flicker problem (maybe I hope)

My Macbook has been flickering for the last 5 months getting worse and worse. It has gone back to apple several times, they denied it was happening each time!?!?!?! What are you to do in such a situation? Anyway a friend of mine has a Macbook PRO (lucky git), I tried his 80w power adapter in my Macbook..... the flickering stopped, after hours of use still no flicker. I add that I have tried numerous 60w Macbook adapters since I had already been told it may have been an adapter fault, but to no avail. It seems, as improbable as it sounds, that the Macbook needs an 80w power supply not 60w!!!!!!

Hope this works for everyone with the screen flicker problem, as I know just how annoying this was getting!!!
