Command-R works even with no recovery partition (it's in the EFI). Despite that, I fully appreciate why you'd want your own physical copy.

Yeah, so... There is not one reason why you would ever need a physical copy. If you have an Air then you naturally have an internet connection readily available to you. I completely understand Apple's decision to de-clutter and leave the disc out. It's a brilliant cost cutting measure.

Why do you imply which I have bolded?

There are scenarios when you may not have internet or slow internet and would like to reinstall an os

When you are at your cabin or lake house with no Internet?

When traveling in the car and have no Internet?

When on a flight and have no Internet?

When at a hotel with very slow wifi?

But the point is... you don't go into either of those scenarios, or even infinitely more possibilities thinking: "my computer might crash and I need a copy of my OS". Complete hard drive failures are common enough, but still not a very common thing. In all of your scenarios, you might be gone no longer than a week at a time from a reliable internet connection.

Not saying anyone who brings a backup is an idiot, just saying I think Apple has it right.

I was just stating it makes sense to have a full copy on a USB (at least for me) since you might not always have ability to downloas the full OS. It is nice to have everything with you so that you can still function.
