I'm growing my hair out, and by "growing it out", I mean I shaved my head 3 weeks ago with a #1, then trimmed the top with a #3, and the sides with a #2 so that it doesn't look like a big puffy ball of mess.

I, too, cut my own hair. but I don't like feeling like a sheep being sheered, so I actually use scissors. Yes. It is uneven, choppy, and ridiculous-looking.

It's pretty great- every time I get a haircut I look like I just escaped the asylum.

It'd be a problem, except that's pretty much what I'm going for.

Lets see some pics :p

Reminds me of a style i was going for a couple of years ago. I would take my clippers and just take random chunks out of my hair, grade 0, then go at it with scissors. Looked mental, I loved it, i called it the tramp dog look. Might do it again sometime but i got summer placement interviews coming up soon.

I find clear communication to be my problem when I get a haircut. If I don't say exactly what I want, I don't get exactly what I want :)
Maybe it's different for men, but any time I go in for a trim, I'll say, "Just a one inch trim, please. *shows what one inch looks like with fingers*" I'll then pause, make sure they heard me and saw me, and repeat, "So I'd like for a simple one inch trim, thanks."

Inevitably, I'll leave with at least three inches hacked off. Grr. Believe me, I don't mind short hair, I mind not getting what I asked for. ;)

All this talk of hair cutting and those "should I cut my hair" threads is just making me so antsy. Must. Save. Up. Need. Hair. Cut.

I hate the stress of getting a hair cut. I have had one to many bad ones in my time. I finally got to the point of just asking my female friends and my girl friend where they go. I will pay the extra money to just go to some one who is good and when I now girls are a lot more picky than guys which general means their person is good. Just feels a little weird going into a very girly looking place. But the reduce stress of a crappy hair cut is well worth it and it turns out normally very well for me.

But I do have a pretty simple hair cut I like. A 2-3 on the sides blended into the top and cut short on top. You will be surprised at how many people can not do that and really screw it up.

Nothing wrong with going to the same place your girlfriend does for a haircut - hell, I've let my girlfriend talk me into a manicure/pedicure along with that haircut.

As you said, it can often come down to paying a bit more to get that better service...

Well first of all I have personal space issues. I like people a good distance away. Secondly as a kid I wound up with a bunch of short hair cuts which was totally socially unacceptable in the 70s. Thirdly, whenever they took the clippers out my ears would get bumped and I found it to be painfully loud.

Oh my god. We have the same haircut personality. Seriously.

The woman has long hair. When it gets close to waist length, she tells me to cut it. She tells me to take off an inch (holds up the finger distance of one inch). Then, I freak out for about an hour. She usually stares at me until I cut her hair.

Then, I take off four inches. For spite. Or because I have no sense of physical space. Or ... because I can't really cut evenly. I mean, I'm not certified to cut hair ...

I Hate my current Hair Cut! That stupid woman at Wal-Mart... Ah well I guess I just have to put up with it for a week or two. Thank goodness my hair grows fast. I look like a Marine or something! ( no offense to military personnel)

None taken. It's a great look

I go to whomever for my hair to be cut....It's very hard to screw it up.

Firstly, what have you got against plonkers?

:p

Secondly, I am living in Tokyo and am not Japanese so i had a little trouble a first finding a hairdresser to cut my hair -- couldn't speak much Japanese -- but thankfully I used to keep my hair short-ish with a #3 shave on the sides and the back and a little longer on top but nothing that required 'product'

I got a few laughts when I would ask for 'a fried chicken on the back and sides' till I got my Japanese pronunciation correct!

Now I have a lillte more stylish hair which is mid-short in length and 'teased with product' -- thanks to a great stylist I have been using for about a year-and-a-half, not far from my apartment

Maybe photos later...

hehe! yeah, my first haircut in Japan was pretty funny too. Actually, though, as much as some hairdressers there said my hair was difficult to cut (mine is thick and wavy), I always got good cuts there - now I actually miss my ear-shave.

YT

p.s. nothing against plonkers, just don't want to be one.
