2008 Aluminium MacBook. It's the oldest MacBook that Yosemite will run on.

I was amazed at how much smoother everything was after installing Yosemite (as an upgrade no less) - Mavericks was really awful on this thing.

Oh, well. Was hoping you has the secret to Yosemite goodness.

My wife and I share a Macbook Pro and when I come back to my old Mac I miss all the new bells and whistles.

I have it all installed and up and running. So far so good. I'll run it for a few weeks and see if the difference stays noticeable.

Thank you everyone for your advice, suggestions, and discussion points. I appreciate the guidance.

2 more things.

not sure if you already do this but u should always have a time machine backup.

go to accessibility preferences> display > check reduce transparency.
this removes all jerkyness from mission control etc.

Hey Y'all,

It has been almost a week since I slapped in the new RAM and got the new SSD formatted, loaded, and installed.

This machine works SOOOOOO much better than it did prior. It is so much better, that I'm not sure I will need to replace it with a new 12" MBA in the spring..... Nah, who doesn't ever want a new MacBook they've been saving for? Hahahaha. I feel like doing the "Happy-Happy, Joy-Joy" dance.

Everyone's advice and the guidance offered (which I know was really basic sometimes - Like D'uh, I can't install a brand new SSD and expect it to work out of the box) has been kindly and generously offered and I appreciate everyone who chimed in. Special thanks to Meister, Cycledance (not dancer), motrek, brdeveloper, Cubutus, (the former five especially!!!) and JackieInCo, keysofanxiety, joshlalonde, chundles, theSeb, DollyStereo, and the JadedMonkey!

It's a five-year-old entry-level machine. I'm glad you're happy with its renewed performance.

But: In those five years, software (not least OS X!) has grown more complex and places more demand on machines. For example, there's more encryption in everything we do on- and off-line, and that leverages modern-processor features that must be emulated on an older machine like yours. Hard disks start to decay and fill up. Once-ample RAM is no longer sufficient, which puts even more burden on the hard disk as virtual memory steps into play. And so on.

So you have multiple technical reasons to regard this doughty little machine as inadequate for today's usage... if not now, then soon.

It's served you well. It deserves appreciation, not hate. It's doing the best it can in circumstances it couldn't dream of five years ago.

I wasn't among those who say you should upgrade. Instead, the day will come soon when you will need to find someone who can use it for really basic purposes, or keep it as a spare machine, or provision it as a server of your own. But it's time, soon, for a glorious new Mac.

Happy for you :)
Use it as long as you can.
