To be fair sports are a big business as well and, IIRC, the NFL is the most popular sport in the US. There is a reason cities fight for major league franchises and major college games/tourniments.

In the end, though, blame the TV viewing public. As long as the consumer likes it companies will continue to dish it out.

You have my deepest sympathies, as we're approaching the 2006 Winter Olympics it's bound to be even worse here in Norway.
Yes, welcome to my world, the worst (?) of two worlds.

Our newscasts in Salt Lake City?

During the Olympics in 2002 it was all Olympics, all the time -- three months prior and three months after. Olympics this, Olympics that. Good grief!

Denver Broncos? Hell, I don't live in Denver and I have to suffer through them too! Becuase the Broncos are the closest major NFL team all of our local feeds are of Broncos games. We get just as much damn Bronco coverage as living in Devner.

LDS. Some stations are worse than others (channel 5), but the top story of the day shouldn't be about the new Temple opening in <name of city here> while we had two fires, a local shooting, and a bombing in Spain. It's absurd.

Uuugh. Sorry for the rant. I like Utah but what people consider "news" here is a total joke.

I agreed, in the end it's all about getting the largest audience, the highest viewership and the money. As long as our average Tom, Dick or Harry like the way the news is now, it will never changed

Personally, I don't much care for sports either. I used to watch NFL games because my father did, and I fell into the habit. I got so wrapped up in it, until one day when I realized I had spent an entire afternoon, from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. or so, watching football. Five hours of sitting and watching, and nothing to show for it except maybe a new 2 pounds of fat.

I haven't watched a game since.

At least with the Olympics, especially the individual competitions, it's supposedly the best "amateur" (at least used to be) athletes competing against athletes from other countries. And college sports, it's about real students from that school competing against students from another. With professional sports, it's about which team can afford the best players, many of whom have no real connection or allegiance to the town they play for. IMO, it's more an entertainment product than an athletic competition.

But, more people care about this (and there's subsequently more money involved) than some local tragedy which directly affects relatively few people.

I know people said they use the internet for news, so do I! much easier..
