Thank you. That's one of the sanest things I've read about this whole issue. Ever.

Thank you. I appreciate the kind words. I've read tons of threads about this and not said a peep. I just kept thinking that yea, *I* think the orientation lock makes more sense, but in 6 months will this issue be relevant? Probably not... which means I'll get over it and life will go on.

iOS 5 may roll around and change it to Push Notifications silencer, then we'll all be fighting over why a mute switch makes more sense than a push notifications silencer, and no one will remember the poor old orientation lock. Out of sight, out of mind.

There's already a button for picture frame mode there. Maybe it could go on the other side of the unlock slider?

That's what I thought at first. But then I thought, hmmm, if things go bump-bump-bump in a bag, perhaps the mute state could be toggled inadvertently? Doesn't seem likely, but possible.

Actually, it's a Push Notification silencer in iOS 4.2. Or more precisely, it silences all system sounds, which include push notifications, keyboard clicks, and some game sound effects. But perhaps iOS 5 will turn it into a true mute switch! :D
