What's with the wavy scrolling on the iPad 3? When you drag the page up or down, the page kind of bends in this annoying seasick kind of manner. My iPad 1 doesn't do this, inertia scrolls just like my MBP and MBA. Running the same IOS, my iPad 1 looks totally normal when scrolling.

I asked an Apple store employee what it was, he said he never noticed it before and figured it was a "feature" of the retina display. Huh?

I searched and it doesn't seem like there are that many threads on this, so I guess it's not bothering a lof of people, but this little "feature" alone made me put the 3 down and not buy it. Wish there was a way to defeat the waviness in settings - anyone else notice this or find it annoying?

Did you notice this on the iPads that are on display at your local Apple Store? I did, but decided I'd still buy an iPad and mine doesn't have this issue. I think it's just the Apple Store displays that have this issue because of how long their screens are kept on for, but this never happens to my personal iPad.

Its the redraw/refresh rate. its called "tearing" you can google LCD tearing and learn about it. Its the refresh rate the screen is drawn at.

I see it. Noticed something similar on my iPad 1 but rarely saw it on the 2. I can see it again on the 3. It's what I presume to be the processor trying to keep up with the screen resolution. I really only see it on busy web pages if I scroll at just the right speed. Personally it doesn't really bother me.

many people including my friend can't see it when I can.

It could be that your eye/brain is able to process a higher frame rate than your friend. Another way to put it, your brain is running at 2ghz while your friend is limping along with a 1ghz CPU brain.....;)

I did see what the OP is talking about and it's much worse than the iPad2. This is especially annoying when reading a newspaper where there's a lot of scrolling to do. I can only speak of the 3 from a brief in-store test. I own the 2.

Surely, this will be fixed with the all new iPad 4.

I sometimes see it when looking at websites but almost always notice it while swiping through pictures in the stock Photos app.

My god, you guys complain about anything. Here we have retina displays with higher resolution than any other tablet in the world...cutting edge technology and you complain about "wavy" lines when scrolling? Oh barely perceptible wavy lines at that. You know, in the age of the CRT, waves lines were part of the experience. I think some people do not appreciate how quickly technology advances.

In a few years time when we have flexible organic displays I'm sure you same lot will be back here complaining about poor viewing angles and color fidelity.

Iphone 4/4S does the same, but in landscape mode. MBPs do the same (try switching between full screen apps, you'll notice the top of the screen being faster than the bottom). Funny thing is, only noticed it after noticing it on the new iPad.

I just don't think this model was ready for prime time in many ways. Obviously a larger processor was needed to properly power a retina display. But it would have been too expensive and/or required more battery or lowered battery life significantly. This is the first Apple product I have owned personally where I have felt it wasn't ready for release/was a big compromise.

If you really want to see this wobbly, buggy "feature" in all its glory, go to the Pulse news app and try scrolling down the pages quickly. So choppy/clippy (for lack of a better description) it could seriously throw an epileptic into a seizure and gives me a headache at times. Obviously something is askew with the processor.

The wavy scrolling happens on iPad, iPad 2 and the new iPad (and iPhones!), so it's nothing to do with the new iPad only.

Not true with the Pulse App. It always scrolled smoothly with iPad 2 and I'm on it every day - it's my main source for news. I think it stutters because the processor is struggling to render the retina images. I don't want to be argumentative but there is a huge difference with that app.. Perhaps I am describing a different phenomenon than what is being described in this thread? I am referring to very obvious stuttering scrolling which I've observed to some extent when browsing but which exhibits most severely in the Pulse app.

Happens on my iPad 3 and used to happen on my iPad 1 as well. Minor irritation, but didn't end up ruining my iPad experience in the end.

I've never seen anything like that on either my iPad 1 or 3. Either your eyesight is too good for your own good, or you need to look at your iPad before the afternoon cocktail. ;)

no problems here either on my iPad 3, compared to my iPad 1 and 2.

while I havent personally checked out Pulse, I think the problem is related to the fact that it might be using UIWebView, which is seriously limited, in that in no way can you use it to produce really cool scrolling in AppStore apps (as opposed to Cydia ones). "Thanks" to Apple.

This has been a major problem with third=party Web browsers for at least 1.5 years and a lot of developers have asked Apple to lift off the restrcition. In vain...

But why would Pulse scrolling work smoothly on iPad 2 but not on iPad 3 if it isn't the processor trying to process for retina?

Noticed this since day 1

I got my iPad 3 on day 1 (absolutely love it) and noticed it right away. I noticed how (in landscape mode) the columns of icons bend when you swipe from page to page of aps. I tried my friend's iPad 2 and couldn't see it. I thought it was because of the large screen resolution and refresh rate, which ended up being the case.

So, scrolling left to right in landscape and top to bottom in portrait has the same warped look. I definitely notice it scrolling web pages in portrait mode.

Overall, not a huge issue, just annoying if you focus on it too much. Luckily there is no issue with games and responsiveness. Overall I think the iPad 3 is excellent, but of course when you push technology you can get some drawbacks (some screen differences, battery charge time, no processing improvement). I'm sure the 4th gen will be 10/10, but I'll be happy with my 3rd gen iPad for a long time, just like my iPhone 4 has held up well.

Its possible that this could get fixed with a firmware/software update in the future, it wouldnt be the first time Apple over came hardware issues with software changes. For instance the coating (inverted blacks) with the first generation ipod touch got fixed with a software update.

I won't have my 64gb ipad 3 until sometime next week but I sure hope it won't be bad enough were I want to return it, also hoping for no tint issues.

No matter how i tried to replicate it, even with the support of alcohol mine stayed normal... maybe yours is a special edition ;)
