It's amazing every new 'I' release we have similar threads to "wait for next generation"

iPhone 2007 and iPhone 2008 were the same exact freaking phones (terms of size, exact processor, exact RAM, exact camera) and people still went for the iPhone 3G cause Apple included 3G/GPS which had been around for 3-4 years in the USA by that time already and in Europe/Asia for 7-8 years.

Same with the iPad 1 vs iPad 2 debate (many had threads saying iPad 2 wasn't worth the upgrade even though it was a major design change and lighter and duo core/face time/crappy camera).

We had similar threads with iPad 2 vs. "new iPad" aka iPad 3 this past March. People were saying performance wise, ipad 2 and ipad 3 were the same. Some people didn't care about the screen. They said iPad 2 and iPad 3 supported the same exact cases and were the same body.

So OP, why did you get the iPad 3 to began with when you could have had iPad 2 for cheaper in March 2012 when Apple discounted all the remaining iPad 2 32/64GB model? Think about it. Performance is the same, the body was the same. So what about the 5MP camera, who really uses the 5MP camera anyways? And iPad 3 was heavier. So you basically got the iPad 3 cause it had a better screen but the trade off was it was heavier?

What you are saying to iPad 4 owners is they are paying for a chip that significantly improves performance. iPad 4 is very fast. It's the fastest ipad/iphone. That's what people are paying for is what you are saying?

So you paid more for the retina screen without improvement over performance in iPad 2?

Think about what you are saying.

Disclaimer, I've owned iPad 1,2,3, and now 4. I still have iPad 3 and iPad 4. I sold off my iPad 2 and got the iPad 4 wifi while also keeping the LTE iPad 3 (cause unlimited Verizon LTE data is amazing).

I still have an iPad 2. I wouldn't mind moving to a 4 now, but am in no rush to do so. Unless I get a really tempting offer for my ipad 2 I'll stick with it for a while - even then I'd probably go for a mini rather then the ipad4.

Not me...I think since this will be my first personal iPad that I will continue to be very satisfied until Gen7 comes out.

Others in my family have a iPad 2 and a iPad 3 and both still enjoying them quite a bit.

Also, I just purchase the Fire HD last month and can carry it in my pocket for reading, very nice.

I have to agree with the OP's statement.

If you look way way back almost 7 entire months ago then claiming the iPad3 was a minor update was considered blasphemy and those heathens were stoned. But now here we are with the exact same product (and same flaws) but a speed bump is all that was missing from making the iPad 3 perfect?

People love whats new and thats fine. But its silly to pretend that if an updated and fully redesigned iPad5 gets released before next Q4 that iPad4 owners would be the most burned.

Sounds like a case of "I'm upset, therefore, to feel better I will project my anger on those that have what I want so I can feel better about myself." Seriously people, whenever a new device comes out, insecurity abounds in these forums.

Exactly, well put aneftp. I chose the iPad 3 when it was released because of the screen resolution. I could have saved money getting the iPad 2 but then I'd have a device that's missing the main feature I was looking for.

The current iPad has, among other things, has an amazingly fast processor. If that processor speed is what people have been holding out for it's available now.

The next release will probably have at least one additional major feature over the iPad 4. No need for those who purchased the current model to feel bad.

Man you're soooo right!! I should've just waited to upgrade my OG iPad 1 until the 5 came out so I wouldn't feel so burned next year. Or I should've waited til the 6 came out so I wouldn't be burned when I got my 5 after upgrading from my 1... :D

Some of us don't freak out for not having the newest. If you make a purchase now, you should know that it's not going to be the best next year. If it meets the requirements you want now, then get it. If not, then wait. But more likely than not you won't ever buy anything..

unagimiyagi is right. It's all iPods as far as rhe eye can see, and Apple may fool around with cosmetic changes, but there is no more innovation here. There is just fleecing me and the other isheep every product cycle.

It's too bad. All of my iproducts are beautiful, wonderful, and enjoyable devices. I'll enjoy them a bit longer, sell them, and move over to Android or Windows, where I see regular innovation occurring. My Nexus 3 and 7 are impressive and affordable. The Nexus 10 looks to me like the (possibly) best tablet ever made. So, I think 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation iPad owners are going to feel burned.

By the way, Apple has the resources (human and material) to put out far superior products. They just decide not to do it, and they'd rather stick with a bizarrely limited experience (in some ways inferior to the 90s PDAs) than pioneer new ground. The big iPod retina with the fancy new connector and the mini iPod with the screen from 2007 are like a slap in the face in my opinion.

People take "innovation" too seriously. Apple (and all of humankind) in general cannot just innovate a groundbreaking product every 2 years. Things like the iPhone and iPad and iPod happen once in a lifetime.

It is the reason why a car from 2012 is functionally the same as a car from 1965. Granted we have power windows, locks, navigation systems but those enhancements are to be expected in a 40 year period. But the car itself, it's purpose, 4 wheels and a steering wheel with windows in the front, back, and sides, there is no innovation for decades. Same with the personal computer, it is still the same as it was in 1984. A monitor, desktop, mouse, and keyboard.

I don't get how Apple gets flack for doing minor enhancements to their products for 5 years when cars and televisions have been doing it for decades.

Any Verizon grandfathered unlimited phone user with an LTE sim (from phone line) can put LTE sim into Verizon iPad and get unlimited data.

Per FCC agreement. Verizon cannot disable ur LTE data or device if u sim swap from phone to tablet. (att will nail u if u try this and disable ur phone data plan the rest of the month).

Just happens I never use my Verizon phone line. So convenient just leaving the LTE sim tied to old phone line in Verizon LTE iPad and getting unlimited data.

I played with the 4th gen iPad today and although it felt a bit smoother (might be a placebo effect), it really is heavy. The 3rd gen's weight you could live with when it first came out because you convinced yourself that it was an acceptable trade off due to the brilliant Retina display. I went back to using the iPad 2 and that is the maximum weight for enjoyability (less is better).

The 4th gen seems more like a "S" upgrade since it still has the same design and weight and doesn't look like the current design of the iPhone 5 and iPad mini. Though admittedly I feel a little burned as a 3rd gen owner, I feel like this is the cycle to be on (just like how the iPhone 3G, 4, and 5 is the best cycle to be on).

Next year we will most likely see an iPad mini-like design which will also be much thinner and lighter.

Personally, I'm waiting for the 15th Gen with the Translucent Shape Shifter iScreen.

Apple's competitors are putting out innovative products with better specs and lower prices, but what's even worse is that Apple is putting out products that carry outdated technology. The iPad Mini screen comes from 2007 and the processor from 2011.

I'm OK with iPod iterations. The iPod Touch came out in 2007 and we've basically gotten nothing but different sized versions of the same thing. But, I am not pleased with 6 month product cycles, new connectors (I have a drawer full of these stupid battery and connector cables for Apple, and maybe three for all of my Android and Windows devices), and premium prices. At these prices, I expect more innovative products.

Concretely speaking, they should wait to release the iPad 4 with a new body, new connector, and new processor all together next year. That is a real upgrade, and one that doesn't jerk around their customers. It's not innovation, but it is more fair to their customers.

I've got an iPad 3 I was planning on selling to upgrade to the 4, but now that the resale value has been completely trashed, I am thinking it would be better to just hold onto it for a year or two and transition over to platforms that actually have competition, innovation, and more realistic pricing.

What's the point of buying a 4 when the Google Nexus is lighter, faster, cheaper, and better (the best display on the market)?

The same reason why you won't buy a Nexus instead of the next iPad even though you threaten to do so, because we love our Apple products no matter how flawed they might be.

Why would I feel burned? We won't see it until October, so what's the big deal? And it's not just the "placebo effect" - the 4 is significantly faster and smoother than the 3.
As for weight, they're officially the same weight. It's a non-issue.

I completely agree.

Why would I feel burned? I know full well that with any Apple product I buy there will be a better version coming out and if the changes are something I would appreciate I will buy that one.

I would feel more burnt by some of the other companies because they create new models at a much faster rate.

Exactly. We all know how it works with Apple. You buy the latest product, a year goes by and a new one comes out. It's that simple.

If the features are something you want, upgrade. If not, like all other Apple products, the device you have will *gasp* keep working for several years.

Maybe :)

But, I've got a Nexus 3 phone and Nexus 7, so I've already got a foot in the Android world. We'll see how things go this year. At any rate, I find Microsoft and Android to be a lot more exciting, especially in terms of the operating systems.

If Ive can turn around iOS. If Apple can put out an iPad that exceeds the capabilities of Android tablets. Then, I might think about sticking around. I guess we'll see.

At any rate, we're lucky to finally see some competition to the big iPod.

The best thing you can do is never buy any Apple product, then it will never become outdated... #
Seriously, timing the market is a fool's game. Buy it when you need it and sell it when you're ready. You will ALWAYS lose money on technology.

No no. Go back and read my question again.

Read your post and saw something funny that you wrote. Beginning with the part that you said about the iPad 4 "it is really heavy". Than you wrote down below "3rd Generation weight you could live with" than soon after you wrote " 4th Generation seems more like a "S" since it still has the same design and weight"

How can it have the same weight as the ipad 3 when you said the iPad 4 was real heavy over the iPad 3 ?

Its not an "S" version simply because of the faster CPU, the better FaceTime HD over the other models, the better tweaked WiFi hardware, and the smaller connector. Those things make it an iPad 4, not ipad 3S. ;)

Using the iPhone as the guide, the same features with upgraded internals in the same form factor kind of make it an S.

Or are you suggesting the iPhone 4S is actually an iPhone 5?
