as much as i dislike Windows and Microsoft, let's remember that most people use Microsoft Office and a lot of us are using the Flip4Mac components for QT.

True, I, as do many Mac users, use M$ Office (Word & Excel, Keynote has replaced my need for Powerpoint) on my Macs. :)

If you can't get explorer.exe to relaunch try this:
Press Control+Alt+ Delete once and task manager should show up.
Next Select the processes tab and look for the explorer.exe process.
Once you find that select explorer.exe and click end process.
When you receive the warning dialog box click OK.
Go back to Task Manager and Select Applications tab.
Click New task and type explorer.exe and it should relaunch the Windows GUI.

Hope that was helpful and simple enough!:p
P.S. Good luck!

I tired that. When I first didn't get the GUI, I went into task manager (this was back on Wed) and the process wasn't even there. So of course I ask it to run the explorer.exe task and it will attempt to launch for a second or two and then end.

I see the process come up, then go away. Something probably corrupted the explorer.exe file because I can't even get the GUI in safe mode.

Although that made me think of something. If I can find a floppy (CD Drive doesn't want to recognize CD's now - ahh!) I can copy an explorer.exe file off of another Win XP machine a family member of mine has and then hopefully replace it.

Better dust off the DOS command booklet :) .

Congrats on the switch jessep28, Windows is just plain evil. :D :)

Windows isn't evil - it has its place. As much as Mac users (including me now) like to bash Microsoft, they really have some good products. They just happen to be the big dog on the block and there will always be a segement of the population that hates the dominant ones.

That United States and it's foreign policy tends to come to mind for a good analogy.

In order for WIndows to really be successful in the long run in my opinion, they need a radical transformation in the next version after Vista, much like the leap from OS9 to OS X. It needs to be more stable, easier to use and way more secure than it is now.

I was talking to my Mom (computer programmer) over Thanksgiving and she was talking about how she wants to reformat her computer due to viruses and stuff they have been dealing with that supposedly even virus software can't get rid of. That's just scary, but she isn't the brightest when it comes to everyday computing (she can program databases real well though), so her ascertains need to be discounted heavily.

I might be getting somewhere...

I was able to get system restore to launch...hopefully rolling the machine back to a date back in September when I knew it worked will yield success.

But if the file's corrupt then there's nothing I can do!

Now when I use windows at work and I have multiple windows open I hate that I keep pusing the F9 key. No expose' on this stupid windows box.

I keep trying to push ALT + C , etc thinking the ALT key is the command key.

Screws me up since ALT usually causes the FILE menu to be highlighted in windows machines and MS Office doesn't like that.

I just have to say this: Windows was the first OS I used (if you don't count DOS in the 80's :) ), it was horrible. I thought I was a technophobe. A friend convinced me to get a Mac and I was hooked immediately. The Mac made me want to use it. I learned a ton in a short period of time because of that. I ask you- shouldn't machines make you want to use them rather than put up with them because you have to?
