I know, that's why I said "you never know what it will add", meaning new design, more ports, better battery etc

LOL there's no battery in a Mac Pro!!!

And - isn't that we have PCI cards? How hard would it be to pop in a USB 3.0/FW1600 card into any of the empty slots?

Same with putting a BRD in the optical bay.

Face it, my logic is undeniable.

We're talking about upgrade strategies for apple products in general. The discussion need not center on Mac Pros. Still, if a user has a certain task in mind that heavily uses vector instructions, as an example, a new CPU architecture could mean a huge boost in performance.

Again, Macs in general. You can't add it to other than Mac Pro and those slots may already be in use. There is also some issues with finding cards that work under OS X as far as I know.

You can have your own opinion, but not your own facts.

You can't add Westmere CPU to your Mac Pro, that's the main point why people are waiting. Apple might add more PCIe slots, more HD bays and SATA ports, faster FireWire, etc. You never know

After reading this post, I have to agree with what you are saying.

Don't have a hackintosh :) I sold that about a month ago after building it. Too much tinkering.

Going to apple store tomorrow and order a Macbook pro, I'm heading to university in a month :D

Good luck

in the University.. and don't try to party too much.. I know.. when I was your age thats all I ever did but still wound up with a 3.3 average for the 5 years I was there..

Join a Frat also.. you will have plenty of beer, and really wild weekends!

It took 2 hours to render it all. For 2 hours I spent my time on my laptop, browsing through the internet and checking out macrumors. It was hell for 2 hours. Start working with my footage after it's rendered, stretch my legs a bit...BOOM! The power goes out, turn back the mac pro on...and I gotta re-render everything. Another 2 hours of my life wasted. :)

Guess you should have got a UPS :)

It still does everything!!!

I know right?

At this rate, I don't know when I'll need to upgrade since this machine STILL DOES EVERYTHING A 2010 WOULD, maybe 10% slower or so (we're talking a few seconds).

It's not like Mac Pro's just stop working after 12 months.

My MacBook Pro does absolutely everything I need.

It just doesn't do it fast enough! ;)

Dear op, I have a 400 mhz G4 from 2000 that I will sell you for 3000$. It still does everything. Since you obviously don't care about value for money, this must be a great deal for you.

Really? You're attempt at a joke highlights the exact OPPOSITE of what I was trying to illustrate.

I care a great deal about the value of money. Which is why I am trying to point out that you don't need to buy a new Mac Pro every year because of incremental speed upgrades.

So you're rendering your 1080p video on a 2008 Mac Pro. So now, you're gonna spend another 5-6000 dollars to deck out a 2010 Mac Pro, for a few minor upgrades that aren't even rumors or speculations?

Sounds like you don't understand how business work.

Also, a big "LOL" to the person who is talking about how a faster computer would have helped them render faster while on UNIVERSITY COMPUTERS. I'll tell the taxpayers to get right on that so you can go on rendering Myst 2!

Not everyone even has a Mac Pro. You make it sound like EVERYONE has fully specced 2008 Mac Pro and are now waiting for 2010 Mac Pro. I guess most people currently do their job on an iMac, PowerMac, MBP etc, but now wants more speed and don't want to spend their money on 16 months old technology.

Also, 2008 8-cores seems to go for 3000-4000$ so if you sell it, you don't have to put more than a grand or two towards the new machine. That is fairly reasonable price for over 50% performance increase.

You have just given us a good laugh with your worthless rants. You shouldn't judge how other people spend their money, it's not your business. A Toyota gets you from place A to place B, just like Ferrari does

Ah how pleasant. A belligerent OP who makes claims that his 2006 model is "10% slower" than the current, and when corrected starts calling people "sonny", and insisting that he has more deadlines than anyone else. Yeah, that's reasonable. Good job.

Oh come on, isn't a bored guy at work allowed to troll a little?

Do I need to mock up a "Summon: Hellhammer" Magic Card?

Yeah, actually that would be entertaining.

Hey, no wonder you don't need a faster machine, you got time to make mock ups of cards for games that were popular ten years ago. :p

I kid, I kid.

Oh come on, isn't a bored guy at work allowed to troll a little?

Sure you can. But isn't a bored guy who is spending his summer holiday on MR allowed to answer the troll? :p

You make some valid points but they are buried under the exaggerated crap you have posted as well. I admit there are people who are waiting but will not see much, if any difference between current and the new one. However, it's their decision.

No offense, this is regular pre-update discussion  Someone must maintain our laugh muscles as well :D I guess some of you points were not that serious, like the 10% increase

Do I need to mock up a "Summon: Hellhammer" Magic Card?

That would be cool :) It will be a blockbuster, trust me ;)

My baby

My 2006 Mac Pro was simply the best thing I've ever purchased. Slapped 4 additional GB of Crucial RAM and flashed a 512MB ATI 4870. The thing hasn't skipped a beat.

Rock. Solid. Reliability.
